A Writer on Writing by Sally Jenkins is a freelance writer's dream come true. Jenkins says that discipline is the cornerstone of good writing: Bursts of inspiration may never come but you must keep writing. Chapter Four - Open the Box is a great tool that entails grabbing the name of a character, setting, etc. out of a compartmentalized shoe box, tying the elements together and putting your musings onto paper. Devote one hour per day to writing. Enroll in online writing courses. Avoid emails, internet searches and phone calls when writing. You will be motivated to write a novel in 30 days or start a blog. A Writer on Writing has pages and pages of practical tips that can take your writing career to the next level.
I was impressed by A Writer on Writing. As a freelance writer, I have read numerous books on the do's and don'ts of writing. But Sally Jenkins' down-to-earth advice acknowledged the day-to-day obstacles, e.g. juggling family and work, getting distracted and overcoming intimidation when submitting letters to editors by providing realistic solutions. Her style was personable but authoritative. The pace was fast with a format that was easy to follow and concise - just 38 pages -- with lots of takeaways. Jenkins has has published two anthologies. She has written numerous articles about writing for various periodicals in the UK. A Writer on Writing is highly recommended for all writers.

Why not five stars? I felt it was a bit of a pot-pourri and, as she readily explains herself, brings together articles she's had published at different times in writing magazines. That made it feel a bit disjointed, but it's nonetheless a useful and worthwhile book, and very easy to read and digest. Definitely worth the very reasonable purchase price.
The style is conversational and easy to read and the examples provided exemplify the points made clearly.
There were a couple of chapters that I skimmed over - not being a non-fiction writer - but the advice provided is sensible, realistic and suitable for those individuals who have always wondered if they could be a writer, but are hesitant to know where to begin.
I would certainly recommend this to any new writers out there. Clear, concise and can be read in one sitting so as not to take up too much valuable writing time.
