The Writer's Book of Inspiration: Quotes on Writing and the Literary Life is sooooooo much more than a book of quotes. It will inspire new ideas and motivate you to action. If even one quote moves you as much as many have moved me then the book is worth buying.

I would read a quote and find new creative avenues opening up in my thought process. I didn't just hop from one quote to the next....I thought I would but I couldn't. I never found myself having to search and search for the one quote that would hit me hard....quote after quote would hit me like a ton of bricks or make me laugh until my jaws hurt. Clever, clever, clever!

Stephanie Gunning gets big time credit from me in spite of the quotes being from other writers. She was able to wisely select and skillfully organize the quotes in a manner that reads more like a group discussion... that is being held with the world's most inspiring people. Anyone can find a good quote, but being able to find a bunch of great quotes - that inspire - and flow well when read one after another is pure genius at work.

I found witty banter going back and forth as I cruised my way through the book. I even credit her with inspiring me to be creative in other areas...not just writing. I pick up the book and use it as my creative muse. I read a few quotes until I feel inspiration building up within me. Then I apply that energy into the area I planned on working.

Whether you dig quotes...or dig being inspired....this book delivers a mini-miracle with each quote.

The book was pretty nice. There were some pretty solid quotes in it, like "You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you," by Ray Bradbury. Overall, the quotes are inspiring or made me laugh. Some I didn't quite understand. The writer gave a brief introduction and sounded like a decent author. I can't give this book five stars because it is just a collection of quotes from other people, but I enjoyed reading it, for whatever that is worth.

These are Stephanie Gunning's own words, from the preface of her new book, "Inspiration for Writers: Quotes on Writing and the Literary Life." These carefully chosen quotes are by writers whose literary accomplishments span every era and genre: from Shakespeare to Dr. Seuss, Jane Austen to J.K. Rowling, George Orwell to Groucho Marx, Maya Angelou to Michael Crichton. Although I recognized a few of the quotes, most were new to me and made me feel like I'd discovered hidden treasure.

At first I was a little disappointed that I had an ebook version of "Inspiration for Writers," because this is the type of book that's great to open at random, letting your muse lead you to the perfect quote at the perfect time. But I soon discovered that you can just as easily use the location bar at the bottom of an e-reader, or reading app, as a vehicle of inviting synchronicity to surprise and delight you. Just point to a spot, or "location," on the scroll bar, click, and see what words of wisdom are waiting for you there.

Writing, by its very nature, is a solitary journey. Yet no writer is truly alone. This book will connect you with the greater writing community, as well as with your own heart and love of writing. After reading, and sitting with, a few of the quotes in this book, don't be surprised if you soon find yourself tucked away in your favorite writing nook scribbling away with pen and paper, or watching your fingers fly across your computer keyboard. These quotes will ignite your creative fire, and inspire you to sit down and write.

A neat, handy-sized, paperback. Like the font used. On the whole, good advice to new writers. Thought the comments on page 176 (Jane Yolen) about exercising one's writing muscle was eminently true. Same applies to learning languages. When one doesn't exercise it, get out of the habit of using it, it begins to disappear down 'memory lane' and is forgotten. One small point of criticism: why the duplication of pages 171 and 174?
