I gave a copy of the book to a writer friend who once lived in Paris. He says it is the only Paris book that he keeps on his bookshelf and re-reads.
Inspiring and encouraging. Written with humanity and compassion. If you think you have a novel within you, and the idea of going to Paris to write excites you... this book is for you.

It's a cosy book in some ways but not an indulgent one. Maisel has worked for years as a therapist and has written widely on creativity and the issues faced by creators, but there is no psychobabble-he doesn't need any newagey soup to conceal his weaknesses in this area because he doesn't have weaknesses in this area. He really does understand why writers so often intend to write and then just don't. And why they go to Paris and get transfixed by the ghostly stare of Hemingway and the Lost Generation. He knows it's difficult to raise the money for such a trip, and he knows how discouraging people can be about such a plan. He also knows, crucially, how to give writers a good shake and galvanize them into writing. There isn't a formula or an arcane secret-you just write. When you're tired. When it's raining and you wish it was sunny. When your little rented apartment is driving you nuts. Also, when you love Paris so very much you just want to sit and stare and then PRETEND you've been writing.
This book is all about authenticity. Oddly enough, then, you can find it useful even if you've never been to Paris and do not intend to go. Perhaps it's another city you can fall in love with and write in..This book's all about making time and space for that writing, about giving yourself permission, about not giving up. It gives excellent advice about writing in cafes (not just Parisian ones). It advises you on how to cope with the absurd. And so on. And a new book in a similar vein is due out in the autumn-A WRITER'S SAN FRANCISCO. Knowing Maisel, it'll be great.
Dr. M. introduces us to the city with wonderful descriptions and illustrations and whether you know Paris or are visiting for the first time, there is something for everyone. It will make you want to visit even if you have no plans at this time.
