I absolutely adore the way William Frisbee approaches us as an author. He basically says, 'yeah, it's a lot of information, but you need to understand a lot of background in order to craft those one or two lines that set your scene just enough for your characters' actions to make sense'. Direct quote: "Writers must be subtler, they have to draw the reader in with realistic details, just enough to make the story believable but not so much they are lecturing people on technology." Now, that's a military man who totally 'gets' being a writer. He'll undoubtedly have MY editor praising him, that's for sure!
That's what makes this, and his future books, essential as a tool for crafting a military sci-fi story. William Frisbee doesn't intend to tell us every single detail possible about the military, but he'll certainly try! By doing so, he'll give us plenty of information so we can write our military sci fi with confidence. And I should also add, his table of contents is an amazing feat of its own, a paragon of efficiency that lets you choose exactly that information you need at the moment, instead of having to wade through multiple chapters to find it.
The broad yet detailed coverage will help writers of any genre including a setting or character with a military background, write like you know what you're talking about.
Based on his honorable Marine Corps career and years of exhaustive research, Frisbee has given us the first of his excellent series to help us write with greater accuracy, our own works touching on the military world.
