What created this massive trend to self-publishing?
In my opinion, there are three reasons for this trend: economics, short turnaround
time, and no inventory to store.
An author can publish an eBook on Amazon, Barnes&Noble, or iBooks at
zero cost in about 48 hours. The print edition is usually available within
12 days but there is a cost involved (See Choosing an ISBN).
Yes, there are editing, proofreading, and cover design costs if you must
outsource these skills to create a well-written book.
But...getting the eBook out to the customer using online eBookstore outlets is free
to the author. The properly formatted content and cover file is uploaded directly to the
retailer by you. It is a simple process and quick. Where traditional publishers quote
about 12 months to put your book in the public eye, self-publishing does it in 12 days.
The POD print edition would be free too except for the wholesale catalog identifier
number (ISBN) for bookstore ordering purposes. If your book's ID number is not in the
catalog, bookstores cannot order it.
Even world-famous authors are self-publishing today...because now they can do it their
way and make more money too.
It is time to take that book churning inside of you and give it to the world!
