King gives many solid tips on writing that are technical and solid, but he also makes clear that you have to do what works for you. The things you should be doing as a writer he does not hedge on though – and they include getting the work done and giving up TV. The latter point is an excellent one as I increasingly see written work that is either heavily influenced by the screen or written with that destination in mind. The work suffers for this influence.
As helpful as King’s tips on craft are, what stayed with me the most after reading this book was his work ethic. There is no such thing as an overnight success, and King’s memoir shows us yet again how true this is. A helpful and interesting read.
