Top reviews from the United States

Years ago, I read Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace by Joseph Williams, and I recently bought Trimble's book to compare the two books. Because Joseph Williams treated the topics of style and clarity so comprehensively, I did not expect to learn anything new in Trimble's book. I was wrong.

I wish I had started with Trimble's book. If you are interested in improving your writing--particularly expository writing--I would recommend starting with Trimble's book before moving on to the Joseph Williams book for a more detailed treatment of the subject. One of the things I found most useful in Trimble's book was his advice on how to plan and write an essay, which made me wish I had read this book in high school or college. If you are a student and have to write any type of essay or report, read this book.

I use this for my Intro to English course in college. It has been the most helpful guidebook on how to truly Write With Style. Some of the ideas may seem a bit obvious, but Trimble did a pretty amazing job critiquing the differences between a novice and a veteran writer. This has helped me write better response essays, giving me the full points that I can feel confident for deserving. Anybody struggling with writers' block or just wanting something fun to read should definitely give this book a try! It might just be the best advice you'll ever get in life...

Thanks a lot. Can’t be better than this.

I bought this book for a Lower division English course as it was required. It isn't the most exciting thing to read, but if you are new to college level writing it is helpful. If you aren't required to get this for a class or don't think you need help with writing basics then you may want to look elsewhere.

This book has been an amazing tool for me as a writer! The author writes in such a way that the sometimes dry topic of English mechanics is actually fun to read. I go back to 'Writing With Style' pretty often. Though, admittedly, I didn't refer to it before I wrote this review.

In outlining the process for good writing, John Trimble focuses not only on the writing process but on the definition of good writing. His style is evidence that he knows his stuff: rather than being stiff, his writing is easy to read and easy to access. In fact, he hits the bulls-eye when he states that good writers are also good readers. Mimic first, go beyond second. In addition, the zero draft is genius: much better than calling the writing "prewriting" or even the "rough draft." His rationale makes sense, too, for this process. Great for writers and writing teachers.

Originally bought this for my Writing 2 class but I ended up keeping it because I loved the ideas in it so much! Definitely helped me elevate my writing and put some concepts into easier to follow and more manageable steps, definitely take some things with a grain of salt when it comes to academic writing but other than that give some of the ideas a shot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but why such small print?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 17, 2021
Good content that helps with the thinking process for academic papers. Unfortunately the print is tiny, making it a tiring read.

Quotations, which are used extensively throughout the book, are in 8 or 9pt font. The main text is a little bigger, but not much. The publisher needs to take a course on modern typesetting; 11pt should be the minimum font size used for legibility.

Publisher: add a few pages to this book and bump the font size by a couple of points. At £40 for a thin paperback surely there’s enough fat to cover the negligible costs.
