That probably isn't a plot device you want to use. At least if you want your character around for the sequel.

"Writing Violence IV: Defense" addresses what your character needs to be doing to not go to the Great Editor in the Sky. While certain elements remain consistent, defense manifests differently when your character is under attack from fists, knives, clubs, pistols and rifles. It shows you aspects of defense even most self-defense 'experts' don't understand because they haven't been jumped by multiple attackers, been attacked with knives or shot at. The information in this book is predicated on decades of experience with violence. It also shows the writer the horrors of a failing defense. (For example how a single blow crashing through a weak block can turn into six different impacts -- each worse than the one before.) For those writing about professional and experienced characters, this book goes into the awareness and knowledge they use to stay alive against opponents as skilled and dangerous as they are. This includes how they blend a single action to be both defensive and offensive to stay off the coroner's slab.

Can you as a writer use this information to write more gripping action scenes? You betcha.

For non-writers this book covers issues that aren't commonly taught. Issues and strategies will keep you alive and unharmed when the violence isn't a just simulation in the training hall

Marc MacYoung has never fit well into simple categories. That's because of his diverse past. When his family fell into situational poverty he found himself facing lifestyles and problems that most people have no idea exist, much less have experience dealing with. It was during that time the earned the street name "Animal." Many of his stories start with qualifiers like "The first time I was shot at..." and "The last time I had someone try to stab me..." (It was a long hard climb out of that lifestyle.) Decades of experience in environments and professions where violence was common, would eventually lead him to being a court recognized expert about violence, crime, and self-defense.

This wide ranging background gives him a completely different perspectives of the complex problems involved with personal safety, conflict, violence, and crime avoidance —especially how there are no simple answers (e.g., martial arts or carrying a gun). Those approaches may soothe fears, but they don't actually address danger —or the problems you'll face if you have to use them.

Over the years his works have evolved from that of a streetfighter to taking a more practical approach of avoidance and/or deterrence. This opens far more effective and non-violent options for his readers. As he often says "I'm not about fear management. My goal is danger management. I'm more interested in teaching you how to avoid walking into the lion's jaws than giving you false confidence about doing so."

I'm not talking "knowledge" here, I'm talking actual, usable value. Any writer willing to do the work this book requires is guaranteed to improve their own work. Screenwriters especially take note. "Real" writing is no more about ego than self-defense is, and movie references alone are worth the price of admission ... as an illustrated primer on "unrealistic." Before you hit that "30," read this book. Just as self-defense starts with changing the engagement, understanding that principle will engage your readers/viewers. Some examples (of hundreds): The correct response to "Hands up!" could not only save your life, it could save your novel. Knowing that "The best defense is a good offense" ... applies only when you go first ... and effectively. Getting the difference between "cover" and "concealment." The key to this indispensable book is its blunt application of molecule-deep knowledge. Those for whom violence is not the weather but the climate ... the abused child, the domestic violence victim, the bullying target ... they all know the prodromal signs of attack: the change in breathing patterns, the smells, the shift in air currents. But translating that knowledge into self-defense can only be learned from an expert. Despite self-proclaimed titles, there are few of those. And Marc MacYoung is the very edge of that blade.
