Wow, what an utterly heartwarming and truly touching story. It takes place in 1880 Missouri, and I loved the author's foreword about how she picked the locale and its actual place in history. The setting was both vivid and life-like and I felt as though I could practically see the farm - complete with rows of corn and wheat blowing in the wind. Then there were Loyal and August (love those names by the way) who were multi-dimensional and endearing; neither of whom were perfect, but whose mistakes, hopes, and fears only made them seem more real. August especially tugged at my heart with his need to prove himself, and the continuous setbacks due to his troubled past. The love between these two was beautifully written and though there is some petting and such, the loves scenes were glossed over and not described in detail. Overall it was an emotionally engaging romance that literally brought tears to my eyes, and there was even a twist at the end that I wasn't expecting.
Honestly, I really don't see how anyone can read this story and not be moved by it, its simply that lovely. Not only would I absolutely recommend this book, but I'm already looking forward to more from Ms. Merritt and can hardly wait =)
The plot moves along at a nice pace, turning in places you don't quite expect, yet that make perfect sense in hindsight. I'd recommend this book to anyone, even people who shy away from the usual historical novel.
The brothers do try to set themselves up in life so her father will see them worthy. One trying to do so steals and is put on the wrong side of the law. The other sets up with a farm and gets her...in a way. The twists and turns of the love for a "brother" and love for a "woman" that one man, who now is an honest man has, becomes more apparent once his brother dies. Now the Wrong Brother must return to pick up the pieces and make sure his brother's bride is cared for. It became impossible for me to put the book down.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a story of heartache and finding love, all in one. The loss of a brother, making August grow up and decide to take on a wife and a child so that he can do right by his brother and keep his farm. Loyal grew up with the brothers and chose Jeremiah, although wondered if it should have been August. She was so afraid to show her true emotions, feeling as if she did, she would be betraying Jeremiah.
The story takes on as a quick read (which I love). One moment you are at 6%, and the next at 90%! It has that much of an amazing story that draws you in. Just when we thought that things were going wonderfully, the past comes back to haunt August. We wonder ... can the pair get passed what has come back? Is he truly to blame for the accusations of what happened years ago?
You can not help but root for the two. I know that they are made for each other. You will find yourself talking out loud saying things like "nooooo" and "awww ... he loves her!!!" Ha ha. Those are the stories that I love the most. The ones that can bring real emotion into your life. I have found a new Author that I will continue to follow. Enjoy and Happy Reading!!!
