First of all, authors that can take multiple story lines, with multiple characters, and weave them together, all the while keeping the main plot in motion, are rare indeed. Randall Miller did so, and kept me interested every minute. This is a story that doesn't fit into a single genre. Yes, there were elements of SpecOps, and certainly the IT expertise and hacking, but then there were elements of the war on terror, local gangbangers, as well as law enforcement. There was also believable romance, and that is never a bad thing, in context.
Second, the characters were great. I really enjoyed Mark, and Luci, but there were also significant ancillary characters that played pivotal roles. One of the interesting things about the characters was, Miller developed characters deeply, even though they were destined to leave us, for one reason or another. The unhurried manner in which the plot unfolded made it all that much more enjoyable to me. I like that Miller didn't feel compelled to rush, to entertain. He was spinning a complex story, and was enjoying the telling, and we got to come with him.
I am looking forward to the next installment, and where we are going from here. Suffice it to say, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Vince Flynn, Brad Thor genre, but also the police thriller dramas.
Of course with books we can always make the ending reasonably happy. I wish that were true for all disasterouw events like this. Thankfully the next book in this series is out so I got that one now too. I love to read and have always love to read.. maybe it comes from growing up in a time when tvs were not a common thing, and certainly computers were not either. Movies were affordable back then as well. Thanks for a good story!!!
This book is, in my opinion, as good as any thriller written about Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvath, or Tommy Carmellini. The action is fast paced and well thought out. Believable and exciting even, yet the action is only one facet of this great book.
This book covers the majority of America's political spectrum. Good, bad, grey, you name it. You can identify with the characters, even those of differing beliefs. You can understand why they believe something, respect that belief, while still disagreeing with them. People should read this book for that alone.
Final analysis: Amazing book, well worth the investment. I read at least one book a week even when I'm busy. I probably average 2-3 books a week over the course of a year. Even with all the books I read, across many genres, I would put this book in the top 5 I've read in the last 12 months. You aren't paying just for action/excitement. You are also getting snapshots of America's current sociopolitical status and a glimpse into our potential future...
