This isn’t just a techie focus centered around software but an expansive look at agile in terms of what it was really meant to do, help real people focus on real progress in whatever they attempt to do. You can of course narrow the discussion to software and hardware and managing government to name a few, but to truly understand the authors clear, concise, real world explanation of a mindset that is changing so much of everything is exciting. The author has obviously spent quite a bit of time working in and instructing agile. He presents example after example that makes clear the abstract concepts of agile. The reading is fast paced but enjoyable as a train ride through the mountains with new scenes flashing past in bright colors. Always clear and interesting. You can not only understand agile but also get a hint of some of the more intriguing aspects and promises of the future it entails. I would recommend this book for those who have been interested in the topic but maybe hesitant or just time limited to investigate. This is a great place to start.
Mr. Russell challenges us to recognize that running a business is much like following the path of a guided missile. Like the target of a guided missile, the target of our business (our market) is often moving and changing. We cannot "set and forget", but have to constantly monitor what is going on and make course adjustments as we go. As he says: assume you are wrong and like the missile, continually monitor the situation and make course adjustments until finally you are right (you deliver what the market wants).
This is a very important message at a time when it is easier and cheaper than ever for new companies, new competitors, to enter your market. Business leaders can not afford to be complacent, to make plans a year in advance and execute to the plan. We have to be more fluid, more agile in our thinking and remember that while planning is important, the plan itself is not important.
It's all unsettling, I know, and I'm not the only one who's felt those stomach butterflies-- those nerves & anxieties over, 'how's it all going to work out?' There are no guaranteed answers to a specific script, which is what the author here bases this approach on. But by following his advice we can make it come out right in the end if we understand and accept that it will be wrong in the beginning.
This is an extremely comprehensive guide that Mike breaks down meticulously-- but it is not overwhelming, and at approx. 150 pages it won't bury you under the detritus of the irrelevant. Everything has been compactly packed in here and it is all here for a reason.
We get a concise differentiation between the 'right until wrong' vs. 'wrong until right' and it is illustrated by personal experience of the author's. We learn about personal & business agility, economic storms, navigating it all, plans of attack, Changes-Risks compared, Minimum Viables, Innovation Conundrums, Leadership principles in this mode of operation and a Ton More.
Absolutely brilliant business book!
