I used to believe Jacob Evans could be mine.
That was before he delivered unforgivable news rather than sweeping me off my feet.
Not that I can fault his choice.
He got the sweetest little girl out of the deal.
I took the heartbreak as a learning experience and moved on for the better.
Jake did the opposite—allowing bitterness to fill the void.
Only his daughter can pull him from the broody gloom.
Those moments are my favorite.
Not that it matters.
Jake isn’t anything to me other than a reminder of what almost was.
Besides, we couldn’t be more wrong for each other.
I’ve come to accept that.
But as it turns out, Jake hasn’t.

Jake and Harper dated years ago but broke up when it’s discovered that a girl he slept with before is pregnant with his child. It’s years later and Jake is acting grumpy to pretend he doesn’t still have feelings for her but it’s hard to avoid her when she’s your daughter’s ballet teacher and she starts working at your favorite bar. His daughter, Sydney, is determined for them to be together and once Jake realizes he can’t be without Harper, he uses his daughter’s love for Harper to help them get back together.
I have to say Jake and Harper had a type of love that was meant to be. I mean Jake never stopped loving her and she still loved him too. I love how Sydney was so in love with Harper and was determined for her to be her mother. Sydney had such a great personality and I love her. I loved this book and their small gossipy town. Also, I loved the ending, it was an adorable ending.
Jake is your grumpy, brooding dad who adores and shines only for his little girl and no one else. He is especially grumpy towards Harper. His ex who he can’t claim, but would lose his cool and goes berserk whenever another male attempts to get close.
Harper is your sunshine heroine who is patient yet on guard of her heart. Harper and Jake’s trio story is definitely swoon worthy but Syd’s character steals the show. Unexpected twist was given to Syd’s mom that brought me to tears. Love this overall story. Spicy but enough to get you fanning and swooning and not that’s it’s the only thing it consumes their story - well written. On to the next story.
Second chance stories can be so hard. Too often, I find that the thing that broke them up was too unforgivable. Or maybe I’m too salty and bitter. But having been a scorned woman, I often find it impossible to suspend reality enough to believe so many women just swoon and forget some pretty vile transgressions, usually with little groveling. That wasn’t the case here. Jake and Harper had a brief, but emotionally intense relationship for only 4 months when they were only 21 and 18. Then his ex shows up pregnant. In a misguided attempt to do the right thing for his baby, he breaks things off brutally with Harper. Stomps on her heart to make sure she leaves. While I was heartbroken for her and mad at him for not just manning up and saying “I need to try to make things work with her for my baby,” I got that he was still basically a kid that was doing the best he could. Where he lost me was after. When we get into the story, it’s seven years later. She’s lived her life and is a ball of sunshine, while he has hardened into a closed off grouchy jerk. He is a grade A jerk to her, treating her as though SHE somehow wronged him. With no context, or reason for the way he acted towards her, I ultimately put the book away and moved on to two other books instead. I was pretty sure I was never going to warm to him. Buuuuut…. I did come back. And I am so glad I did.
I love this book. I adore his daughter Sydney. I love that Harper managed to remain a sunshine warm loving person, and that she was able to adore his daughter even when he was so cruel to her. I love how great Jake is as a dad, and I fell in love with him after he finally started knocking down his walls. I love that once he finally broke, he was 100% all in. After reading the bonus scenes, I really wish the scene shared when he sees Harper for the first time when baby Sydney is only a few months old was included. I felt like it really hit my heart, I could actually understand him a bit, and maybe I wouldn’t have walked away the first time I tried to read this if I had seen that.
This may be shocking. I also love Morgan, the ex. I was so prepared to hate her. She spent years doing her daughter wrong, popping in for moment, and ignoring her daughter’s attempts to make contact in between. It would have been so easy to keep her the villain. And as far as Harper and Jake’s relationship, the villain there was never Morgan. She was before their time, and Jake is the one that threw away their relationship when Morgan told him she was pregnant. But Harloe did something beautiful, and I have respect for both Harloe and Morgan. Real talk- not everyone is capable of being a good parent. Being the one to carry the pregnancy doesn’t mean you’re suddenly skilled at parenting. It’s the most difficult job out there, and some people just can’t. Morgan was detached from the beginning and even sought therapy to try to fix it unsuccessfully. It takes a special amazing person to recognize their own shortcomings and acknowledge that half-performing as a parent can be more damaging than stepping back. It would have been so easy to continue to paint her as a deadbeat, but instead we got to see her as a woman who wanted the best for her daughter, even if it wasn’t her. The interaction between Morgan and Harper had me in tears. And the way Harper honored Morgan afterwards, in the words she spoke to Sydney had me crying. It. Was. Perfection. ❤️
“Your mommy loves you very much, superstar. That’s why she had to leave. Her love is so big that she chose to share it with me and your dad. Then we can love you even more since she can’t be here with you.” 🥹🥹. Thank you for handling that with honor and grace.
To recap - don’t give up on Jake. Don’t quit, even if you’re waffling for the first third or so of the story. I promise, he will win your heart, and you will definitely be thankful you stuck it out for Jake, Harper, and Sydney’s HEA.
I loved the jealousy scenes from Jake
He kept sabotaging her dates and using his daughter as an excuse. Not gonna lie that was really funny
The only thing I didn’t like about the book was the singing during making love part. That was weird. Like really really weird. Other than that this book was good
Years later finds Jacob as a single dad to Sydney, and mechanic in the small town of Knox Creek.
While Harper is still her bubbly self on the sidelines of his life. Jacob has a rough and aggressive exterior while being a "gooey marshmallow" on the inside gorgeous his little princess.
Jacob's alpha-hole mentality, while hot, left me spending a lot of time wondering why the heck he was so angry with her honestly. I thoroughly loved Harper's character ❤️ Plus, characters from the author's other books centered around all the steamy drama in town also make appearances for continued closures.

Jake was downright cruel to Harper but she couldn't stop poking the bear. His little girl Sydney was adorable, who loved Harper and her dancing school. Sydney ended up being a match maker, getting Jake to recognise that Harper would be a good addition to their family., he just-had to step up and apologise how he had treated her. Loved the locket story, Plus the way Jake showed Harper how to maintain her car., pretty hot.

Harper Wilson dance instructor and also bartender at rooster added to her recent cv. Her bestie and co partner is pregnant and now living with her fiance so money is tight. But still her past history is definitely still the topic of conversation. Brilliant storyline

I’ll explain why this wasn’t a 5 star for me and then get into what I loved. Simply put; the prologue seems like it belongs to another book - in terms of tone. That prologue was so beautifully angsty, so pained that I had goosebumps at the end. I kept thinking “here comes the grovel because there’s no way Harper can let this treatment of herself go easily”. Boy, was I wrong. The book continues to start at chapter 1 with the characters almost having a playful banter with each other. The banter continues this way until Jake decides he can’t “resist” any longer and has loved Harper all along. Excuse me? I’m sorry but what did I miss?
I think this story would have been so much more beautiful and impactful if it followed the journey of the pain that Jake’s “situation” and further handling of that “situation” caused.
All that aside, this is not a book you’ll regret reading. It’s super fun, the characters are all really cute and the pace makes it hard to put down. I adored Jake’s relationship with the woman in his life and his outspoken declaration of emotions once he decided it was Game On! The book is definitely worth a read.

“If that’s what you want. I’ve already been mourning the loss of what could’ve been. Seems only fair to suffer alone after you ruined me.”
Jake and Harper were friends, and when they finally decided to take things to another level, Jake found out that he got someone else pregnant and he's about to be a dad. Harper was completely shattered and, went to college only to return 6 years later. This story will pull on your heartstrings. Harper has a heart of gold and regardless and Jake's grumpy and mean words Harper doesn't stoop to his level. I love Harper's personality. She is sweet, down to earth, kind, and doesn't have a mean bone in her body. There is good bantering and lots of swoony interactions. OMG, my heart just melted for his daughter Sydney.
This book is very much a slow burn and the ending was not what I expected.

But his daughter Sydney, is in Harper's dance class and her wrapped around her finger...constantly pulling Harper and Jake together, forcing them to spend time together.
I adored the push/pull of their relationship, the spice and the amount of times Jake flipped his hat backwards..because holy hell is that hot!!!!
