Product Description

The Wusthof Bakers knife is very different than other knives. The long blade of the knife can cut through cakes of all sizes. The blade is triangular in shape so it can also be used to serve with. This cake knife is micro serrated so that it will not tear or cause excessive crumbing. A straight blade would ruin the cakeby tering it. The offset handle acts a a good guide for portion control as well as balance while serving.

I own a few Wusthof knives and I've come to enjoy them over the years. They weren't inexpensive but the knives have performed well in my kitchen for a variety of purposes and they have held up over the years, with a little care. Anyway, I recently saw the Wusthof Gourmet cake knife and thought what-the-heck and I purchased it.

The design shape is nice -- seated edge on one side, size comfortably for 8 or 9 in rounds (cake or pie). However, the manufacturing just isn't up to my other Wusthof knives. Dare I say: my first reaction was that it felt flimsy and cheap? Now it turns out Wusthof isn't hiding this. I just didn't realize that "Gourmet" in the product name isn't a mindless marketing qualifier, it's the formal name of the Wusthof line -- a "more affordable" stamped steel knife line that includes synthetic handles. Having not purchased a knife in this series before I was surprised by the cheapness of feel -- the knife weighs about half of what you'd expect, the metal is clearly thinner, etc. If you own anything in the Wusthof Classic line or Le Cordon Bleu or Ikon series, these will feel a significant step (trip, fall) down.

But, the knife works. I mean, it cuts cake and pie, which is kind of the point. And, Wusthof does not make a cake knife in any of their other lines. So, it fills a niche, and I can't say it is poor ... but having grown comfortable with some of Wusthof's higher quality knives, I can't rate it highly either.

This is a very well-made cake knife. The balance is perfect and the serrated edge makes cutting cake with fondant or icing easy with much less mess. Very satisfied.
