Wytches: Bad Egg Halloween Special Kindle & comiXology

4.4 out of 5 stars 97 ratings

“BAD EGG” Serving as both a stand-alone story in the WYTCHES world and a prequel to the highly anticipated WYTCHES, VOL. 2, “BAD EGG” tells the story of Seb and Jackson—two innocent teenagers reared on opposite sides of the eternal struggle between good and evil. Sebastian’s mother is a member of “The Irons,” the most ruthless Wytch hunters in history, while Jackson’s family are “High Horn” Wytches. Can these two boys find friendship amidst this age-old blood feud, or are their fates already sealed? Collecting the entire IMAGE+ magazine run and, for the first time, the 13-page, pulse-pounding conclusion plus extra materials, WYTCHES: BAD EGG reunites the Eisner-award winning duo of SCOTT SNYDER and JOCK in a horror-filled romp just in time for Halloween!

Can’t wait for Arc 2! This was a nice little reminder of how amazing this series is... If you enjoyed the first arc, bad egg is a must!

They'll probably make a movie of this... It's that good.

In the first story arc, Clara told Charlie that she had lost her legs from being pledged to the Wytches. In this story, she came from a long line of Irons and she appears to have working legs.

    headline says it all!

This is a sort of prequel, sequel, place holder, one-shot for a larger Wytches arc that was and will be. I'm not familiar with all of that, but read and enjoyed this as the one-shot it was. There's plenty of exposition and explaining, even among people who already know or should know what's being explained, but if you don't mind that sort of thing this was good fun.

There's solid pencil work that's then colored with slapdash impressionistic strokes so the whole project has a modern, graffiti like look that sometimes works with the story and sometimes doesn't. The story is a creatures-among-us Lovecraft sort of tale with monster hunters and monster collaborators. Two boys from different sides form a friendship and all of the tension turns on who's going to walk away in one piece.

The action built up well, there were a few nice touches, and a few twists. I wasn't captivated, and don't need to track down the other arcs, but this struck me as a fine read.

(Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

If you read the first volume and want a deeper look at the background lore of this universe this is the perfect content for you.

More “Wytches”? Yes, please. Although it’s not quite the long-promised second arc that Scott Snyder has been teasing us with for near-on 5 years now, “Bad Egg” deliver something almost as good: an 80-page prologue of sorts, one that serves to introduce us to a new batch of characters who will no doubt have important roles to play down the line. As with the initial arc, Snyder and artist Jock prove impressively adept at pulling us into the story and its emotional stakes – this is peak stressful comics, in the very best, very harshest way. Here’s hoping 2020 brings us Arc #2.

Don't read this before Wytches vol.1, definitely do read this if you enjoy vol.1.
