This is not the Xacto I knew as a young man. Poor quality throughout. Blades are super thin gauge metal. Plating on handles is poor. Even the magnetic strip that holds the blades in the box doesn't work well, and the blades fall out loose when you shut the lid.

Talk about a brand going down hill.

Ok this is a great little set. I have to really stretch into the nitty gritty to fine anything wrong with the kit.

So... nit picking details...

The box is wonderful and made of solid wood. The inside is VERY cheap thin plastic insert. they have a thin little magnetic strip along the plastic that barely keeps the blades stuck in the cover. If you are careful with it, they will stay in place. Otherwise, they will fall out when you close the box.

on the possitive side, there are so many different blades and devices i dont know i'll be able to find a use for all of them. I'm very tempted to start some odd projects just so i can use some of the odder ones. Anyway, you get alot of variety.... maybe even too much? I wonder if i'll EVER use some of these....

This set has basically every hobby knife that you could need. My wife and I use it extensively when we are crafting. There are plenty of blades and different handles to enable you to cut as you need to. The wooden case is nicely designed and holds everything perfectly.

I use Amazon for most of my purchases and update my reviews if anything changes with the products. I do this so other Amazon users can get a real feel for the life of the product. You can look at my review which will be close to my purchase date and tell how the product is doing as time passes. I am not associated with any company and all opinions are my very own.

As others have indicated, the plastic inserts to hold the tools and blades is somewhat thin, but it works, and is far better than the cardboard inserts in my original set which I have used for more than 60 years. There is a magnetic strip intended to hold the blades in place, but it doesn't come up far enough to touch the blades in order to hold them. I easily solved the problem by putting an additional magnetic strip on top of the original to increase the thickness...problem solved.

The box is part mdf and part actual wood.

The inserts on mine hold the blades securely, no complaint there. Have older versions of the handles, so I just swapped them out in place of the new ones, and will thrash those soundly.

The new plane is a total POS, but luckily, I have an older version of that as well, just swapped the blade into the old base, and am giving that away. Nothing is particularly bad about the gouges or the router blades......just a bit of sharpening.

I got the Amazon Warehouse deal, cannot see anything wrong with the packaging, and the price is right. I thought the box would be busted or something, but it looks and works fine.

To summarize it: mehh, it is ok. But it is not THE X-acto you might remember from your childhood.

The box is nice, but it is not made out of wood but MDF. The inlet which holds the parts is just simply awful. It is the same kind you of vacuum pullet plastic inlet you find in a box of fancy chocolates. It does not hold the tools well, though the blades are supposed to keep in the lit by a magnet strip, which sort-of works. However, I do not expect the plastic inlet to survive too many uses.

The tools itself are medium quality. It is a tad better than the those cheap disposable hobby knifes you find for a bug-fifty at your favorite home improvement store.

Where the set shines is with the variety of blades and tools. It comes with three handles, all made of aluminum, one with plastic hand piece for a better grip. Handles feel very light in the hand, which might be good or bad, depending on your preference. The bare aluminum ones have no texture as you might remember from X-acto knifes of the old days. The vise appears to hold the blades ok, but I would be very careful opening and closing it. It does not move smooth and you could easily end up cutting yourself.

The set also includes a couple of carving guages and knifes which fit in the big handle with the plastic hand piece.

There is a wood stripper, made out of plastic, which you can use with a handle to get a straight line. There is a little block plane and a spokeshave which you can use as a little hand planer. Finally a really nice little sanding block is included. Just the right size for small projects. Nice touches I think.

The most important would be the quality of the blades itself. Since I just got the set, I cannot attest to that.

I'm partial to xacto, from ny experiences in using them on leatherwork. This set for example, has all I will need for leather, paper, gasket-making, and any other odd job I come up with. They are sturdy and sharp. That's what I need!

This kit is a nice assortment of blades and two different handles. Where it lacks is that the blades are meant to hold into the case with a magnet strip however some of the blades don't fit very well in there spot and any jarring of the box when it is closed makes the blades fall loose in the case. Also my case wont latch closed either with is no good. I have grabbed it by the top several times to move it and the bottom swings open dropping all the loose blades. Outside of those issues I really like it and will be very mindful of handling it in the future.
