Editorial Reviews

x is the follow-up to Sheeran’s breakthrough debut album + and finds the British singer-songwriter collaborating with a stellar list of producers, including multiple GRAMMY Award®-winners Rick Rubin and Jeff Bhasker, multiple GRAMMY Award®-nominee Benny Blanco, Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, and BRIT-Award nominee and + collaborator Jake Gosling.

x is preceded by the exhilarating lead single “Sing,” which has rapidly rocketed into the top 10 at CHR/Pop radio outlets nationwide while also ascending the top 15 at Hot AC and on the overall Billboard “Hot 100.”

I loved the + album, and when I heard Ed was releasing an edgier sequel titled × I was nervous. According to Taylor Swift, this album would have more hip hop and Rick Rubin stated that he would let Ed make his songs and then he (Rubin) would insert more beats and rhythm in the background. This all horrified me. Eds album was perfect. Why ruin it?!

Wow was I worried for nothing. The album is like + put much more mature and defined. Ed's talent has truly multiplied. Every song is wonderful, you cannot skip one. Thinking Out Loud, Photograph, The Man, Take It Back, and I See Fire are my personal favorites.

Wow. I cannot stop listening. Real music is back. Thank you, Ed.

"I'm not a rapper I'm a singer with a flow" says Ed Sheeran on "Take It Back", a lively acoustic rapped/sung number from his sophomore disc titled "X" for multiply, and what a flow he has. Fans of his debut "+" ("Plus" - notice a pattern here?) will find more to like here, an edgier more mature Sheeran. There is a fuller sound this time around enveloping his clever picturesque lyrics and folky base.

Opening cut "One" is a folky ballad with his impassioned vocals alternating between lower register and falsetto. Lead-off single "Sing" is co-written and produced by Pharrell, driven by hard beats and flamenco-style guitars, lovely harmonies and a killer singalong "Oh o o o" hook with shades of Justin Timberlake. It works very well and became his first UK chart topper. "Don't" is a handclap-driven number, a tale about a cheating lover. "Nina" has more of an urban feel with nice tinkling piano and a spoken/sung delivery.

"Bloodstream" sets cyclic-sounding guitars to a gently thumping beat. The perky "Runaway" is another Pharrell production. The catchy groovy "The Man" is reminiscent of fellow Brit The Streets, and finds him rapping "Sorry for the honesty, but I had to get this off my chest". The soulful "Thinking Out Loud" sounds like Marvin Gaye gone acoustic, with hints of "Let's Get It On". "Afire Love" showcases his vocals against an enchanting piano/violin backdrop, a touching look at his Grandfather's battle with alzheimer's.

The deluxe edition has 4 additional songs, including the earlier mentioned "Take It Back" and his enthralling "I See Fire" from "The Hobbit" soundtrack, subtle and anthemic all at once.

This album is amazing. It shows Ed's ability and diversity. I wish i would have known this was censored though. I hate censored albums.

Well crafted both lyrically and melodically. Every song on x is great. It is rare that you find an album today that can be listened to from start to finish without skipping. This album is just that. In my opinion, not only is this Sheeran's best album, it is in the running for album of the year.

I first discovered Ed Sheeran a little over two years ago. I didn't think it could get any better than his first major studio release, +, but this CD leaves me at a loss for words. It will leave you laughing one minute, falling in love the next, and trying not to cry the minute after that. It is a rare thing these days to feel emotionally connected to a song, let alone a whole album. While Ed Sheeran does indeed have the voice of an angel, it is his impeccable choice of lyrics and melodies that truly make him stand out.

The album starts with "One", a classic Ed Sheeran acoustic ballad that transitions well into "I'm a Mess", which has a simple beat but the most amazing vocal runs. Next comes the crowd pleasing singles, "Sing" and "Don't". If you haven't heard these on your local station yet, "Sing" blends Pharrell's style with Sheeran's smoothness, while "Don't" has fun lyrics and sounds like it belongs in the movie "Holes" (this is a good thing!). "Nina" comes next, which is a catchy ballad about his ex Nina Nesbitt. We head back to classic Ed Sheeran with "Photograph", and then into "Bloodstream" which seems to mix classic Sheeran with a coal miners feel, all set to a steady beat that reminds me of the old Genesis game "Ecco". "Tenerife Sea" is the first song Sheeran played live from the album and follows his signature style, while "Runaway" really capitalizes on the coal miners/bluesy feel that Sheeran incorporates into quite a few songs this album (and it's amazing). The first of Sheeran's "flow" songs, as he likes to call them, is "The Man"; while Sheeran's rap songs have never been my favorites, they do give him a chance to capitalize on his amazing lyrics.

This album is sensational. It was worth the wait! Ed did an incredible job putting this collection of songs together. He took a huge risk releasing something like "Sing" as the lead single, but it was a very smart decision. People who say they "want the old stuff" are just foolish. Not only is the "old" Ed Sheeran VERY present on this album, he took a lot of great creative risks and grew as an artist. That is what I want to see in an artist, not more of the same. The album sounds a lot like his debut "+", but even better. You can tell from the vocals, production, lyrics, etc. how much he has improved. The album has something for everyone. Absolute perfection!
