X-Men: First Class
When Bryan Singer brought Marvel's X-Men to the big screen, Magneto and Professor X were elder statesmen, but Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) travels back in time to present an origin story--and an alternate version of history. While Charles Xavier (Laurence Belcher) grows up privileged in New York, Erik Lehnsherr (Bill Milner) grows up underprivileged in Poland. As children, the mind-reading Charles finds a friend in the shape-shifting Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) and Erik finds an enemy in Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), an energy-absorbing Nazi scientist who treats the metal-bending lad like a lab rat. By 1962, Charles (James McAvoy) has become a swaggering genetics professor and Erik (Michael Fassbender, McAvoy's Band of Brothers costar) has become a brooding agent of revenge. CIA agent Moira (Rose Byrne) brings the two together to work for Division X. With the help of MIB (Oliver Platt) and Hank (A Single Man's Nicholas Hoult), they seek out other mutants, while fending off Shaw and Emma Frost (Mad Men's January Jones), who try to recruit them for more nefarious ends, leading to a showdown in Cuba between the United States and the Soviet Union, the good and bad mutants, and Charles and Erik, whose goals have begun to diverge. Throughout, Vaughn crisscrosses the globe, piles on the visual effects, and juices the action with a rousing score, but it's the actors who make the biggest impression as McAvoy and Fassbender prove themselves worthy successors to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. The movie comes alive whenever they take center stage, and dies a little when they don't. For the most part, though, Vaughn does right by playing up the James Bond parallels and acknowledging the debt to producer Bryan Singer through a couple of clever cameos. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The X-Men movies hold and important place in film history; the first film in the series is often credited as the film that launched the golden age of comic book superheroes on film. Both the original X-Men and it's sequel, X2: X-Men United, are well regarded among audiences. The final film in the trilogy, X-Men: The Last Stand, is not nearly as good as its predecessors - but it's still a fun movie with great action sequences.
Also included in the bundle is the spin-off titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which looks at the early days of Logan (perhaps the most popular character in the franchise). And finally, X-Men: First Class is a prequel which examines the history between Professor Charles Xavier and his friend (turned adversary) Magneto.
My own opinion is that the X-Men films are not quite on the level of Nolan's Batman trilogy or Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. However, these movies are very entertaining, and there are interesting themes related to society's acceptance/rejection of the mutants that parallel our own problems. In terms of technical achievement, I would single out the costume design and the makeup work as top-notch.
If you've never seen the X-Men films, or if you're a fan but have yet to buy them, then this Complete Collection on blu-ray is the perfect set for you and comes highly recommended.Read more ›
These Blue-ray disks has great a picture & sound. How good the movie is I leave up to each person. However, I do have a WARNING for everyone.
I just discovered that some of the "Region A or 1" Blue-ray disks that I bought on "Amazon" will not play in my "Region Free" player. But they play just fine in "Region A or 1" player.
Most of the disks that will not play in my "Region Free" player will display a "Fox" back ground with a message that reads [This disc has been coded for Region A only and will not play in this machine. Please eject this disc and play on a Region A player.] on the screen after you insert the disk. The others that will not play in "Region Free" player have different backgrounds with a similar massage.
*****Four of these five Blue-ray disks happen to have this problem!
Only "X-Men Origins: Wolverine would play in both players.
Since I have one of each this is not a problem for me, but I thought it would be useful to know for those who might only have a "Region Free" player.
***UPDATE, they made an adamantium edition X-men set that has even "The Wolverine" included. better to wait for that
