Review
"In high school and college, the bible is Heather Corinna's S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-To-Know Sexuality Guide to Get You Through Your Teens and Twenties. - Peggy Orenstein, Goop
"I think this is the most comprehensive, honest sex-ed book I have ever seen."―Carol Schramm, First Thursday Book Reviews
"Corinna has put together a blockbuster of a book for young people dealing with sex and relationships. Much like the authors of Our Bodies, Ourselves and its spinoffs, Corinna answers every possible question teens and young adults could have about virginity, puberty, pregnancy, body image, masturbation, sexual identity, the variety of relationships, and the mechanics of partnered sex. [They] also address topics that are often overlooked, e.g., transgender and inter[sex] identities, realistic teen relationship management skills, and pornography. An excellent resource for preteens, teens, young adults, and people working with these populations; highly recommended for most libraries." - Deborah Bigelow, Library Journal
"S.E.X. is a positive and informative all-embracing guide to sexuality by a dedicated author. Heather Corinna challenges adolescents and young adults alike to be proactive in owning their sexuality by being true to themselves, all the while laying the foundation of knowledge and acceptance key factors for the development of a healthy sexuality."- Dr. Lynn Ponton, author, The Sex Lives of Teenagers
"S.E.X. is, literally, a lifesaving book. Corinna's vast commonsense wisdom -- especially on topics relating to gender roles, queer sexuality and gender identities -- has the potential to improve the physical and emotional health of anyone who reads it, and to help heal our culture's unhealthy, conflicted approaches to sex, sexuality and gender." - Lisa Jervis, Bitch magazine co-founder
Praise for Wait, What? A Comic Book Guide to Relationships, Bodies and Growing Up
Listed as a 2019 Chicago Public Library Best of the Best book, as one of the Best LGBTQ Graphic Novels of 2019 by The Advocate and a Notable Children's Book by the The Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association
(Starred review) "Groundbreaking sexuality educator Corinna, founder of the website Scarleteen, works with cartoonist Rotman to bring her knowledge and experience to this slim but mighty guide...This book consistently puts the needs of its readers first, meticulously working to emphasize gender diversity, individuality, and the messiness of adolescence....Body parts are intentionally ungendered, sexual orientations are shown as fluid and joyful, and there is a constant emphasis on the importance of friendships and mutual support. While brief, this guide manages to cover crucial topics thoroughly and humorously, reassuring readers that while all of this is a big deal, it's something they can handle. The cartoony illustrations are appealing and fun, the book includes interactive activities such as word searches and crossword puzzles, and there's a fairly thorough glossary in the back. This extremely modern guide to growing up excels in its field. " - Kirkus Reviews
"It brings a loving, essential lens to matters of heart and soul, offering a roadmap not only to physical changes, but the complex social and emotional terrain of consent, crushes, and identity." -- Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg, Nurture the Wow
"Informative and funny, this slim book is a knock-out success when it comes to what tweens and teens need to know about puberty, gender, and sex. This is a great option for readers who find that puberty and sexuality guides often lack important information or use exclusionary language, Wait, What?: A Comic Book Guide to Relationships, Bodies, and Growing Up has a refreshing, positive stance towards sexuality: It's just another way to express yourself (by yourself and/or with others, if/when you're ready). The language affirms all genders (e.g. "If you've got a vagina," "people with a penis") and sexualities ("Gay? Straight? Both? Neither? Who even knows?"). And it includes sexual assault in the discussion of consent. The nuance it brings to these topics shows a deep respect for tween and teen readers." -- Common Sense Media

I wish every young person had the choice to own and read this book.
To those who say it's too long, or too dense, for young people: Let the youth in your life choose that for themselves, please! If they read only a fraction of this book, they'll be more informed than they were before, and probably curious to learn more.
There are messages about consent, self-care, and being safe (in all senses), in every section.
Take this from Chapter 4, covering self-pleasuring, sexual arousal, and so much more of the stuff I know my younger self was looking for in sex ed books:
"Your sexuality is yours, it is totally about you, and it mostly comes from you, not from anything or anyone outside you. Feeling like it isn’t yours, isn’t mostly about you, and can only come from or be about someone else can do everything from really limiting your sexual life and your enjoyment of it to making you more vulnerable to predatory people or plain old jerks."
I think it's this expression of utter kindness that makes this book stand out. I'm not the intended audience, yet I feel nurtured and cared for reading this book. It feels like, in addition to learning how to say "no!" or "yes!" to sex, in addition to learning the nitty-gritty about birth control and safer sex tools, readers of this book are meant to walk away with the feeling that they matter.
There's so much in this book - so much knowledge, so many facts, so many tools young people can use to give themselves more control over their own bodies. Every chapter, whether it's talking about sexual abuse and assault, or body image, or how to explore one's own personal ethics, is rooted in giving power and agency back to young people. I salute that with everything I've got.
I am so grateful that my son is getting an actual education on sexuality from this book. He has had a positive response to this book, even though talking about sex with your parent can be icky. I believe that is due to the no-nonsense approach by the author.
As for who this book is best suited for, I wouldn't personally give it to a tween, only because it is so thorough it might scare them a bit. It's definitely great for the older teen crowd, though ideally before their first sexual experience (though that's not always realistic, they're sneaky). However, it's still VERY USEFUL for any person who is already sexually active. No maximum age limit.
