Let me start off by saying that the Vantrue X1 delivers excellent video quality - better than my Blackvue (sample captures below). The wide angle lens provides some fisheye distortion, but not enough to be annoying. Oddly, the Blackvue claims a narrower angle but the two captured almost identical areas. The camera itself is a tiny rectangle that clips onto its dedicated suction-cup mount. Power is supplied by a Mini-USB jack on the mount - there is another Mini-USB jack on the bottom of the camera along with an Mini-HDMI output jack.
To cause the suction cup to stick, you rotate the part with the power jack up so that it is vertical. This is very easy, but it forces the camera to mount lower because the rotating part now bumps up against the headliner. (Depending on where you mount the camera, this might not be an issue for you, but it was for me.) And if you get the optional GPS mount, it will have to sit even lower. (See a photo I attached.) In my car, the angle of the windshield causes the camera to be fairly far away from the glass - so much so that it would not fit behind my rear view mirror, which is often a recommended placement. But if I had placed it there the camera's view would be partially blocked by the mirror mount, as it is with my Blackvue, so there are tradeoffs. Where I did put it for testing the camera had an unobstructed view, but I didn't like how far it intruded into the passenger space. If the mount had been designed so that when attached the "knob" was off to the side, I would have liked it better. Or a mount that doesn't use a suction cup at all - especially as I find these tend to fall off over time.
When power is applied, the camera starts recording almost instantly (the Blackvue takes 30-40 seconds to boot up). You can set the screen so that it turns off immediately or after an interval varying from 30 seconds to many minutes (or never). The screen displays various status messages and an LED, not annoyingly bright, flashes to indicate recording.
Recordings are stored in MOV format that you can play with any normal video player. (No dedicated app is provided.) The videos are "stamped" with date and time, an optional text string and number you can set, and if you have the GPS mount, speed, latitude and longitude. For normal recording, the files "roll over" when the SD card fills replacing the oldest recordings. There is a G-sensor so that if a jolt or impact is sensed, the current recording (including a few seconds before) are saved to a separate EVENTS folder that doesn't auto-erase. You can also push a button on the camera to cause the current recording to be saved in EVENTS. When parked, if power remains supplied, the camera will stop recording unless it detects motion. If you want this you really should have a "battery saver" device such as the Vico-Power Plus or Power Magic Pro - Having gone through two Power Magic Pros I would suggest the Vico-Power Plus instead.
Recordings can be viewed on the X1 itself, though I found navigating the menus to do this a bit frustrating. You can power the camera through any high-power USB adapter if you remove it from the mount to do this.
Note that no MicroSD card is included - the manual says that up to 32GB capacity is supported, which is unfortunate as most dashcams nowadays can take bigger ones.
Any dashcam worth having will have something to keep the power going for a short time after power is removed so that it can shut down gracefully and not corrupt the storage. There are two methods generally used - a rechargeable battery and a "supercapacitor". The X1 uses an internal lithium-polymer battery which means that it can't cope with high temperatures the way a supercapacitor model can. If your car gets left in the sun in hot weather you may find the battery fails after a while. I note that the Vico-Power Plus I linked above has a high temperature cutoff so as to cut power to the camera when the temperature exceeds a specified limit. This would be especially useful for the X1.
I have given the Vantrue X1 four stars, which means "I like it". And that's exactly right - for what it is, it's a fine dashcam that takes great videos and has lots of useful features. But I don't like the mounting method, especially when the optional GPS mount is used. My personal preference is for a camera that sits high up on the windshield and has a lens close to the glass. If that doesn't matter to you, then the Vantrue X1 may be a great choice for you.
Photos attached: 1) Mounting position with optional GPS mount (Blackvue DR600G also shown), 2) Still from Vantrue X1, 3) Still of same shot from Blackvue DR600G,
I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed in this dash cam. It works well enough, the mount is nice and secure, and it's pretty easy to use. I bought this camera though specifically for the advertised Parking monitor. The battery within the camera can't run the camera for a long enough period of time. It even lists in the manual that you need to use an external power supply for the parking monitor for any extended period of time.
Video quality is good. It's clear and the night shots are clear enough. It's been reliable thus far and secure.
Vantrue has reached out to me out of concern for my experience. I read their information and did some research of my own. It was unfair of me to expect longer term parking monitor functionality without an external power supply. The cameras I could find that would have this functionality are much, much more expensive and require considerably more work to install. Because of this (and my unfair expectations), I'm giving 1 more star.
The truth is since I've installed this camera, it's been sitting in the car and been running like a champ, turning on when I start the car and off when I park. There's a quick chime to confirm it's turning on, and that's it. The car adapter even has a pass through USB port that is more than powerful enough to charge an iPad or my power hungry One Plus Model 3.
Most of all though, I'm very surprised and very pleased with Vantrue's customer service. I was not expecting to be contacted after my review. It makes me feel like if I had a legitimate issue or problem with the camera, they would be very responsive, polite, and help me out. For this, I'm also giving another star.
Installing the camera was very easy, pop the camera into the suction cup, and install it on the windshield in just a few seconds. Before using the camera, don't forget to remove the protective film from the lens, or the picture quality won't be as clear. This is a 1080P 30fps capable camera, which is more than enough for capturing license plates and for a clear picture. If you want, you can also switch to 720p, but that won't do much because it'll still record at 30fps, but the picture won't be as clear, the video will take less space however. The suction cup provides for a stable and clear video that does not lose its focus due to the shaking caused by the road. Just make sure you have a clean windshield to keep the suction cup and the camera on the windshield at all times.
At night, the quality is still great, and everything that is happening can be seen clearly due to the night vision that this camera has. The night vision activates automatically, so there's less of a hassle of figuring out how to do it. The Vantrue X1 also comes with HDR, which should be used at all times because it makes the picture even better quality, capturing things like road signs and license plates even easier. The microphone quality is very good, and there isn't a break in audio ever. The camera also has 3 settings for the G-sensor, low, medium, and high. I recommend using the medium setting from personal experience because while using the high setting, the video auto locks itself and is labeled as an event if you make a sharp turn or brake a little harder.
Overall, this camera is a great buy for whoever wants to stay safe from insurance frauds and hit and runs. The 1080P quality that this camera provides is more than enough for capturing everything that happened in case of an accident or an event, and will give you peace of mind while on the road. With all the features and the options that this camera has, I would say it is a fair price, and will save you a lot if an accident were to happen.
