I needed one of these to replace one that went bad after several years. I bought two and they work great. The house code adjustment is easier to to adjust quickly in case you use more than one code for different parts of your house. Be sure to get the LEVITON WHOLEHOUSE Multi-Phase Blocking Coupler (also here) to put on your house Neutral wire to block signals going out to other homes or comming in from them. It also bridges the X-10 signal between legs of your electrical service. I have used X-10 for over fifteen years. Plug-in lamp and appliance modules have a life expectancy of about three to five years. I never had a built in switch go bad. I also use Activehome Pro programmable controller. It is never dark during waking hours unless we override it.

After our old Radio Shack controller of 20 plus years died, we found this and got it in a couple of days. It worked just fine with our old modules so we're happy. Our original controller had lots of buttons and this one only has 4 sets which can control 8 modules by using the toggle switch between 1-4 and 5-8. And of course you can use different lettered zones to control even more modules, but that's not as convenient although relatively simple to do. We're glad we found this at such a reasonable price.

UPDATE: Still working great four months later, but I see the price has gone from around $10 in August of 2011 to nearly $30 in December of 2011. I'm not sure it is worth that much.

Power my pool light and pool waterfall with this controller. This is the 3rd one in 10 years. Considering that it stays outside in the Arizona heat and is used in the summer a lot, the controller its worth it.

This gizmo works as described and can turn the modules on and off and adjust the lamp brightness. The instructions are a little confusing because a module labeled 1B or 1C or 2C is not clearly described in the pamphlet. Fooling around with it for a while will clear it up a bit... it will not change the brightness on those new CFL bulbs. They are either on or off, so I don't know what type will work with x10 lamp modules. Maybe the newer LED bulbs can be varied. I was able to turn the water fountain and other appliances on and off but if you must remember that the switch on the appliance must be turned on to use this controller. An appliance that has an electronic on off switch will not work because you have to physically hold the button to turn it on..it will not turn on from a remote. This is good for remote switching of yard lights and fountain pumps etc. and areas that are not easily accessable. I have an old C64 computer that does the same thing but can turn modules on and off at preset times... but this item is worth the price.

Good quality, and functions properly. X10 signal seems strong and easily 'heard' by the rest of the system. Cord is of proper length (about 4'), and the base is non-skid.

There is a thumbwheel on the side that allows selection of 'house codes'. This makes it a little cumbersome to activate or deactivate devices that are spread out over different house codes.....you have to remember that the garage light is "J2" and the front porch is A5, for example......however, X10 recommends all devices in a house be on the same house code.

These units are somewhat hard to find with the proliferation of Insteon devices, and this is a quality one. You won't be disappointed.

If you are handicapped, elderly, or in any way mobility challenged, there is no better way to control lights on the other side of the other room than X10. Put your floor lamps where they look good, control them from anywhere that is convenient. Prefer lights on low while you take a nap -- just dim them. A super convenience. X10 is a mature technology, well established.

Seems to work the same as a quite old original from Radio Shack. The buttons are arranged a little differently, but that may be more of an advantage than disadvantage - will decide when I use both units longer. Needed a second one because I could not see what all the lights were doing from a control in one location. The lights vary in how fast they turn off or on - sometimes more like a dimming function, and sometimes sudden off and on depending on what type of bulb and whether you turn then off and on all at once or one at a time. Dimming function works on both LED dimmables and incandecent bulbs, but less smooth on LEDs, and they tend to flicker in the lowest light ranges. However, both my old and new controller work exactly the same way, so there is probably no fault how either is manufactured, and both seem to be overall satisfactory.

I have been using these little gems for twenty five years or longer. It works superbly just as I knew it would. The convenience they provide is immeasurable. One of my other ones (I always have two) broke (after ten or twelve years) and I was irreconcilable until I could replace it. I am of the opinion that these little beauties just might be adding years to my life. I intend to order another one in the next couple of days to keep as a back-up. The only way to improve this product would be to make it voice activated, but that even seems stupid when I think about it. I guess there isn't any way to improve this product. That means that it is perfect, doesn't it?
