XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year. Earth has changed and is now under alien rule. Facing impossible odds you must rebuild XCOM, and ignite a global resistance to reclaim our world and save humanity. XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations. RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan. TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artefacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point. A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge. RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics. EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals. ENGAGE IN HEAD-TO-HEAD MULTIPLAYER: Mix-and-match squads of humans and aliens and battle head-to-head on randomly-generated maps.

This game has excellent customization and rpg elements. You can customize and change just about everything about your troops. Your troops get better as they gain experience and can specialize in certain classes, like Sharpsooters or Rangers. It really ended up getting me very attached to them. There's also building, research and development within your flying base, which reminds me of the SHIELD Helicarrier from Captain America. There are various missions you must perform affecting the main story, but also hot spots that crop up that you can address or ignore. Lot's of great stuff. I also noticed that the game changes every time you start a new one. The battles are never the same. That makes replay value off the charts. The battles themselves are a lot fun. There's a ton of strategy involved. You absolutely cannot just charge in gung ho and expect to win. No way. You must plan and pay attention to everything.
Of course, the game is not perfect. Don't be fooled by the "Rookie" mode on the difficulty settings. Uh, no. This game does have four modes, but they should be named Hard, Harder, Super Hard, and Insane. This game is punishing at times. In the overall scope of the campaign, a few wrong choices will sink your game and hand victory to the aliens. I've had to restart it twice already. It's also very unforgiving for your troops. You can spend hours building up your elite troops, only to see them die from one or two shots from a rank and file alien. If they get wounded, they will be unavailable to you for days even weeks at a time. That leaves you with scrubs to fight even harder missions. It's tough going. I've angrily closed the game down many times after losing my best troops during a battle. My advice to you is to save often. Another thing that drives me crazy is the slow load times for this game. It is the slowest loading game I have seen on the PS4. Skyrim loads way faster. I don't get why. This game is not graphics intensive, by any means. Think PS3 level graphics. It also gets choppy for cut scenes. Why? How? It also takes forever to load saved games. That's poor game programming to me. Even the battles progress slowly at times for no reason. Not graphics slow do down, but time waiting for the aliens to make their moves. Add to that the annoying ship captain who always chimes in over and over to tell you things you already know. It wouldn't be so annoying if the game didn't pause while he's yammering away. Another thing that drives me absolutely nuts, is the way the game is constantly throwing things at you. In the campaign map, you can't seem to do anything without an event popping up in multiple places with that annoying captain bothering you with things. Sometimes all you want to do is get some supplies, but sometimes endless events interrupt you. "Commander, we have Advent attacking a settlement", "Commander, the aliens are advancing their Avatar project, we must....", "Commander we must make contact with other resistant forces.....", "Commander this...Commander that". God, SHUT UP and let me get my supplies for crying out loud. It's only three days. Leave me ALONE!!!! It's constant sometimes and annoying. There have been times I just hit the ignore button out of frustration.
Overall though, it's a good game with a steep learning curve. I noticed that after restarting the game twice, the fun level increased exponentially. If you learn from your mistakes, you will get better and appreciate the good that this game has to offer. My advice is to stick with it. If you like strategy and have some patience, you will like this game. I give it a thumbs up.
I purchased the DLC and cannot play it.
