Basically, you pop open one panel, turn a lever and pull out another panel, grab the old lamp by hook/finger handle, gently pull up and out. Push the new one in until it pops into place, make sure you replace the inner panel properly (the one with the lever, if not secured properly, the TV won't turn on), then pop the outer panel back on and there you have it, a TV again.
Our lamp has been in for several months, and the image quality (especially brightness) seems to be as good as I remember the stock lamp. Having said that, it may be the stock lamp.
Summary: if your WEGA or whatever goes black and this lamp fits into your unit, then get one. I like a bright TV in a dark room, as does my wife. We've both put this replacement lamp to it's paces, not to mention we leave the TV on when we're not home.
It only took about 15 minutes to change out the containers, so for those of you with this TV and don't mind doing a little extra work, this lamp is for you. 3 Stars for inconvenience and having to handle a broken lamp that contains mercury.
Before ordering this bulb, I called around to try and locate a replacement that I could just go pick up. I went to Best Buy and then Howard's Electronics. Neither carried the lamp, but Howard's referred me to a local TV repair place they thought might carry them. I called and it was like pulling teeth just to get information from the woman who worked there. The whole phone call was an exercise in rudenes and that was before I even understood that you could get a non-Sony brand lamp. Initially, I was inquiring about the SONY replacement lamp. After quite a lengthy amount of time I finally got out of her that she could order a replacement lamp, but she would only order the official Sony replacement lamp. She was intensely offended that I would even consider a "knock-off" brand saying it wouldn't work or last as long as the Sony. It took awhile to get a ballpark price out of her, but she finally said (rudely) that the Sony replacement would be around $235.00 or so. As for the Phillips lamp's longevity, we'll see.Read more ›
