Does what it should, but overpriced and transfer is too mysterious.

This drive works fine, exactly like it should. however, the price charged for it is really steep, simply because you can only use official Xbox 360 hard drives with the system. If purchasing a hard drive for the PC, you could get one about 4 times this size for the same price. With the PS3 allowing you to buy any hard drive you want for the best price you can find, it is a shame you have to spend so much on one for the Xbox 360. Also, the transfer cable software hides too much. It says it will format the drive and copy, but you just get a status bar, not knowing when it is formatting or copying, much less WHAT it is copying. Mine said that some files were corrupted on my original hard drive and could not be copied, but were erased from the original hard drive. It did not tell me which files or even what game/program they might have been related to. I can seem to find anything missing, but I'm waiting for the day when I realize what it was. Too much hiding behind a pretty interface that is simple and not enough letting people know what is happening with their data. It also comes with a bunch of demos, arcade game trials, and "how to use your 360" videos pre-installed on it. It took me a bit to find all these and delete them to reclaim the space. Even if you format it and transfer from an old hard drive, the transfer disc contains all these things and copies them over after it does your data, unless there isn't room for them. Also, the transfer cable won't let you copy from a larger hard drive to a smaller one, regardless of the amount of data. There is no good reason that you shouldn't be able to copy 3GB of data from a 120GB HDD to a 60GB or 20GB HDD if you want to give the bigger one away etc. No reason except that MS only wants you to buy bigger ones so you have more room to buy more downloads. Drive works fine and does what it says though, you know what you are going to get when you overpay for it.

Do not purchase from AEStore. The product they ship is NOT the hard drive that is listed. According to the listing, the hard drive is BY Microsoft. Instead, it arrived in a cheap cardboard box, bubble wrap, and with no indication it was coming from Microsoft. The hard drive itself had fingerprint smudges on the surface, indicating that it is most definitely NOT a new, factory-sealed product. From the large number of positive reviews, I am assuming that other sellers are sending the real deal, but not AEStore.

There was a similar complaint on the 250GB HDD listing, also about AEStore. A buyer, who was duped like me, actually posted pictures of the packaging and hard drive from AEStore. This was the exact same case with me. My suggestion is that you keep switching sellers until one of them sends you the advertised product.

If you don't care about the authenticity of the hard drive, buy a generic 250 GB HDD instead. It is about the same price and the sellers do not try to mislead you that the product is not a generic hard drive. The only difference my research has yielded is that while performance wise, generic brands are supposedly just as good, they cannot play original XBOX games without additional tinkering. There are also probably more defective generics out there as well and you might not be able to tell if there are subtle shortcomings in performance. Random Chinese manufacturer X also probably can't be held accountable for product quality either. You would not have these issues or worries with a Microsoft brand hard drive.

Also, with products like these, I think it is important for people to list in strongly opinionated reviews, who the seller is for the product in question. I imagine this would help Amazon users decrease the likelihood of being duped by sellers who consistently fail to send the advertised product. Again, my purchase was through AEStore.

I had the 20 gb hard drive and I started running out of space after downloading many South Park episodes and Family Guy episodes. I actually had to delete some of my old videos I downloaded. But now that I bought this, space is never a problem. I redownloaded all my old videos I deleted and still have over 90 gb of space. I also found that when you are down to your last 2-4 gb of space, like i was, your xbox tends to get a little slower and flakey when it came to loading profiles and such. That is just like a computer hard drive, use up too much space and it takes longer for the computer to find the files. So having so much more space, everything runs nice and smooth. Highly recommended if you are down to your last 5-8 gb of space, because you'll be down to 3-4 gigs in no time.

Pro: plenty of space. purchased new comes with the data transfer kit. easy to install. You can sell your old 20 gb drive for about $50-$60 and then sell the data transfer kit for $25.

Con: still expensive. If you purchase used, you'll need to get the transfer kit which people are selling for about $25.

Purchased a couple of months ago for an old xbox to replace an 8gig hard drive. I'm not a full-time gamer, just occasionally like to space out for a couple of weeks binge-gaming, then get back to real life. The old machine couldn't handle all the Mass Effect, Skyrim, Dragon's Age, etc., and it really annoyed me having to delete games just for the space to load new ones. Haven't had any difficulty at all with this device.

Update July, 2016. Still performing fine, no issues with the drive.
