About the Xbox 360 Hardware
|
| Xbox 360, shown with wireless controller, is a sleek, customizable gaming and entertainment system. |
Xbox 360 is much smaller than its predecessor--it measures approximately 3.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lbs. It's powered by custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz. It also carries a custom ATI graphics processor 10 MB of embedded DRAM. This is powerful enough to draw 500 million triangles per second. In other words, it makes for great looking games in standard TV definition, and even better thanks to built-in support for HDTV 1080i televisions. It also supports the widescreen 16:9 format.
The unit has a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, which plays both the game media and progressive-scan DVD movies right out of the box. For game-save and media storage, users can choose between the detachable and upgradeable 20GB hard drive, or a separately sold 64MB flash Memory Unit. Along with storing files, the hard drive will make the Xbox 360 backward-compatible with part of the existing Xbox game library.
Xbox 360 uses a refined button layout for its controllers. Back and Start buttons sit at the center of the controller and between them is a new Xbox Guide button, which instantly takes the user to the Xbox 360 user interface. From there, they can check for friends online, access personal digital content like photos and songs, and more. The black and white buttons of the first Xbox controllers have been replaced with new shoulder buttons placed above the left and right triggers. Xbox 360 can accommodate up to four wireless controllers and has three USB 2.0 slots to use for wired controllers or for streaming your digital media from digital cameras, MP3 players, and any Windows XP-based PC. Microsoft has announced plans for a upcoming video-conferencing camera that will work with the system.
|
| Xbox 360 can manage your games, your online friends, and your personal digital library. |
About Xbox 360 Games and Media
All Xbox 360 titles can be played in either standard or high-definition resolution in 16:9 widescreen, with anti-aliasing for smoother graphics. Game designers will be able to take advantage of the system's multi-channel surround sound. The Xbox 360's digital media allows users to supplement any game's music from tracks in their own personal library.
About Xbox Live
A built-in Ethernet port allows users to connect their system to a broadband connection for access to the new Xbox Live Silver. The included service lets anyone create a Gamertag and gamer card to express your online identity, chat live with voice chat, and connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace to buy expansions, maps, and other digital goodies for your games. The subscription service Xbox Live Gold adds to that online competition, game stats, and video chat/messaging. The separately sold wireless adapter supports the common 802.11a, -b, and -g standards.

As far as it having the Falcon chipset, I don't know. There are numerous sites on the web offering various methods of determining if you've gotten one of the vaunted Falcons, but I have no idea who is right or wrong.
My console has had a Nyko Intercooler EX on it since the second week i've owned it. This may or may not have contributed to my lack of problems, but I do recommend this accessory since it is only $20 and the additional ventilation can only help your console.
My final word: If you are unwilling to take the chance of having to deal with a defective console, and there are no 360 games that you MUST play, then spend your gaming dollars elsewhere.
On the other hand, if you're like me and are willing to take the risk in order to play Halo 3, Gears of War, and all the other 360 games, take the plunge.
Just do your research and make sure that the console you're looking at has the game library and features that you're looking for before you slap your money on the table.
Update 2/21/10
Well, I couldn't escape the inevitable. Even the mighty Halo 3 edtition xbox 360 could not escape Microsoft's problems with their latest console. I was about to plug in Bayonetta, having played it only hours before, when my console gave me the great "E74" error. I just mailed the console out last Saturday and am now waiting for it's return and the price tag for the repair. The more I think about it the more I wonder if part of the problem with the 360 is the amount it gets played. I played the crap out of this console for 2 and a half years, a better run than most. The sad part is that if my console ever does completely brick, I will probably buy a new one. Good luck to all of you who roll the dice on the 360!!!

Overall I am satisfied with my purchase, and besides the current Modern Warfare 2 Edition Xbox; I wouldn't switch it for any other version. I do dislike that I don't have the Falcon Chip, and if you add on an Extra Intercooler it could cause some overheating issues. If you do add on an extra Intercooler, my suggestion would be to get one that constantly runs and is powered by it's own supply. Those new Temperature Sensor Intercoolers constrict airflow once it decides to turn off, which is backing up the heat inside your Xbox. I suppose it does a decent job, but stay away from the ones with the Interlocking Power Supply... there is a known problem to cause overheating issues.
Halo 3 did not come with the system, but that's because of the Halo 3 Bundles that were sold separately. It would have jacked up the price of the Halo 3 Xbox, much like the Modern Warfare 2 Edition price. If you want a Limited Edition Xbox, I'd recommend this one because it looks good, plays good, and comes with everything needed: 1 Wireless Controller, Plug and Play Charge Kit, Chargeable Black Battery, Halo 3 Edition Headset, and of course the Xbox itself. The HDMI Port is absolutely a must for anyone who owns a HDTV, the RCA Hook-ups for HDTV just doesn't do your games justice.
Also on a last note, when Buying games be sure to look at Resolution Sizes on the back of the Game Case. If a game doesn't clearly say 1080i, or 1080p, then it will never get to that excellent quality.
