Enter the Xbox with Kinect. He still needs help getting the games set up. And his poor little hand won't hold still long enough to trigger the buttons most of the time (although he is working on it). But once he is in the games he can do that on his own without parental participation.
The adventure game with this set is fun and entertaining, We have not figured out the Disney game yet. There is a problem with getting him identified and it keeps reverting him to a guest avatar. Probably something to do with that five year old inability to stand still issue.
The games are a lot of fun for him and the whole family. We bought Kinect Sports seasons 1 & 2 and also downloaded Kinect Party. The former is a lot of fun with plenty of variety, the latter is silly fun for a 5 year old and entertaining for everyone to watch. Especially when our dog wanders through the middle of a scene.
The only drawback so far is the 4GB of internal memory. You will have to expand this if you plan on downloading anything at all. We downloaded a few free games and the updates to the games we had purchased and the 4gb was gone. The official add on Hard Drive can slide right in to this unit, but it costs more to buy from Microsoft than just going up to the 250gb bundle in the first place. There are ways around buying an official Microsoft Hard drive if you have an old laptop hard drive laying around but theoretically use of those drives can get you removed from Xbox Live, so buyer beware if you go that route.
I know they are talking about the 720 coming out next year, but for our purposed this does the trick. It is a system the whole family can enjoy. We will be trying different games with this both using the Kinect (your Shape, Zumba Rush) and classic arcade style games (The Lego movie games are a big draw for the 5 year old). So far so good and a worthy step up from the old Wii.
The Windows Media Center Extender functionality looks almost identical to Windows Media Center on my Windows 7 PC. I use an HDHomeRun Prime network tv tuner (which is absolutely great, converts my cable tv to a network signal and lets me watch or record cable on any computer/laptop/ipad 2 or 3 in the house without paying the cable company for an HD or DVR receiver) but I needed either a PC or Media Center Extender to watch on my bedroom tv. For $249 plus the ability to play games, stream Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Video on Demand this was the perfect solution. Note you must have a Windows 7 PC configured configured to watch or record your television stations, but this basically just lets you access the Media Center features of your PC from whatever tv your xbox is connected to. Yes, it's annoying that you can't use Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Video apps without being an xbox subscriber, but I picked up a 3 month subscription for $10 on Amazon on Black Friday and it's a small price to pay for a good system. Would highly recommend an xbox for not only gaming, but also media consumption.
What I don't really care for is how even though I have Netflix, Xbox want me to pay them to access my Netflix subscription. I also, don't particularly care for Xbox Live, and hope that once the free trial runs out that I won't be forced to subscribe to it as well. Don't like it forcing me to take pictures of myself (I know its out there in cyberspace), I don't like the possibility that someone I didn't approve of or want to have my pictures may have access to them. However, I would recommend the console to anyone and everyone. Just try not to get caught up in the hype of purchasing stuff you really don't need or have time for.
