I bought this one and simply dropped in my old hard drive and it works exactly like my 360 Slim did. Very happy with this purchase!
I bought this system and a hard drive separately. It turned out to be $20 cheaper than if I would have bought a system with an included hard drive. This xbox is not compatible with the older gray hard drives that previous systems used. I knew this before placing my order, I thought it was worth mentioning. I noticed a lot of people complained about the 4 GB that this unit comes with. The title of the item and description clearly states that this unit has 4 GB.
Setup and downloading my xbox live profile was pretty easy. I install games to my hard drive as recommended by Microsoft to prevent overheating. That took me quite a while (I was starting over with new system, so that was expected).
My only gripe is that Microsoft changed the plugs for the power brick. I was kind of hoping to use my old power brick as a backup. Not a deal breaker, but it is rather annoying. It is worth mentioning that this xbox does not have an optical jack. I don't know if the more expensive one has it or if Microsoft just removed it from all the newer consoles. I personally use the hdmi pass thru on my home sound system, that might be the norm now.
So far I am very happy with this new system. I would recommend it as a viable replacement. Just remember to buy a hard drive, 4 GB isn't enough to install games.
The Peggle game is not on a disc, it is for download and I am still unsure if I will. At least that will save us some storage for now. The controller is smooth and comes with batteries. The console itself is a little thick but I don't mind. The sound of the fan can be heard and for a few seconds there was a weird "new" smell which went away eventually. There is no word per word instructions on how to install but everything is pretty much self explanatory. My box said it should come with a head piece but there wasn't any.
Important note though, you need to buy a HDMI cord separately if you want it on your flat screen.
Other than that, the system works great and one of the cheaper bundles you can find now to purchase a 360. Kids are satisfied with it.
