- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2012Until now I've played console games with a controller and PC games with a keyboard and mouse. Recently we've picked up a bunch of games on sale from Amazon/Steam which are Steam activated that are console ports. We decided to try playing them with this Xbox controller. So my review is based mainly on using this Xbox 360 Wired Controller with Steam games played on Windows Vista & Windows 7 PC systems.
(I do not own an Xbox console.)
What's Good About It?
------------------------
#1 - The Xbox 360 Wired Controller - Black is really well made and feels very comfortable and natural in my hands. Because it has a cord you don't have to worry about batteries, recharging it, or interference with other 2.4GHz wireless devices in your home. I know everyone wants everything wireless these days but it does come with tradeoffs. Also, with the wired controller you don't need to get a $20 receiver to use it with a PC.
#2 - You don't need to install any special drivers or software to use the Xbox controller with your PC. Just plug the USB connector in and most games automatically recognize it. (Don't be fooled into loading drivers and software until you've tried it without first).
#3 - You don't have to remap the buttons if you're using an Xbox controller. All the functionality of the buttons is automatically recognized including vibration feedback.
#4 - You don't need the "special" Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. It's just a gimick and will cost you more.
#5 - The controller works especially well in racing games, heavy platformers and flight simulation games.
#6 - The cord is about 10 feet long so it's easy to sit back in a recliner or on the bed and play games. Yeah!
#7 - I spend enough time in front of a computer screen with my job. It's a relief just to be able to sit back comfortably with the controller in hand and play as though I were playing a regular console game.
What's Not So Good?
------------------------
#1 - Some older games do not recognize the Xbox button setup and you do need to use a software program like Xpadder to map the buttons to the keys, but even then some buttons may not map (in certain games). Not really a problem for me. It's pretty easy to do and if I don't feel like messing with the mapping or I don't like how it turned out, I can always just use my keyboard and mouse.
#2 - I've been using a PS3 controller for many, many years so there is a little bit of a transition to this one. It's heavier for one thing. But the Xbox controller is pretty much a perfect fit to human hands and it really only took me about an hour to be right at home with it. In fact, I like the feel of the right and left controller knobs better than those of the PS3 which are kind of sticky.
#3 - I can't believe that I'm just now trying this and liking it. I feel I've been missing out on a good thing.
I'm not trying to say I'm replacing my keyboard and mouse for PC gaming with an Xbox controller. But some games which are console ports will just play more easily with a controller. Other games like RPG's and MMO's need you to use a lot more buttons than a controller has to play the game effectively.
So I'm not tossing my keyboard and mouse in favor of an Xbox controller; far from it. I'm just expanding my options to give myself more flexibility in what I feel like doing when I pick up a game I want to play.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2012I guess I will preface my review by saying that I bought this controller for the PC and not the XBox 360. I don't even own a 360.
That said, this is an outstanding controller. Photos of the 360 pad always make it look huge and clunky, but the actual device is very compact and ergonomic, and quite easy to hold for extended periods. As iconic as the PS2/3 controllers have become, I think Microsoft has an edge here. The left stick is ABOVE the D-pad, which makes using it as a primary control in driving and fighting games a lot easier. The shoulder buttons are also easy to find- the bottom buttons are triggers while the top 2 are tabs as in a SNES/PSX pad. There are trade-offs: the D-pad is a little harder to use for long periods which makes this controller a little less ideal for oldschool platformers, and the face buttons are a little higher and further out than on a PSX pad making them a little harder to use for quick actions if you also need to use the right analog stick. These are totally livable complaints, however.
Fit and finish is leagues beyond the competitors too. The controller makes ample use of grained plastic, with piano-black accents and soft-touch material on the analog sticks (which curve in to hold your thumb steady). Build quality feels solid and chunky throughout. The cord is long and feels hefty and durable, and even large hands will not feel awkward holding the controller. I have found that the buttons require more pressure than those on a PSX controller to register but since most XBox games use them for options and menu selections that makes sense. The shoulder buttons, especially the triggers, are hair-sensitive, presumably for all your Covenant-shooting needs.
On the PC use of the controller is effortless. Plug it into a USB port, and Windows will automatically begin a download of the appropriate drivers (this makes the more expensive XBox 360 controller for Windows bundle a bit of a rip, since the only difference is that that pack comes with the drivers on-disk). Pretty much any game that accepts joypad input will recognize the controller with no further configuration. The Guide button (the metallic one with an x on it) is unused in most situations, but when you play a games for Windows Live title, it will open and close the Live overlay, and the player number indicator ring will become active.
Overall a well-featured and solid controller choice that comes in at far less than many comparable products (including Sony's controllers, for which there are no native PC drivers). A must-have for PC driving and platforming, although I would never give up my mouse and keyboard for shooters.
PROS
-Great build quality
-Looks good
-Cheap
-Does the job right out of the box
-Great support
CONS
-Takes some adjusting if you are used to other brands
-D-pad is hard to use as a primary input

Benjamin BavelaarReviewed in Canada on June 18, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Great product!
With Amazon Prime trial I got free 2 day shipping. The actual package came after 3 days, which is still great considering it was free shipping. For the actual controller it came in the original box and works 100% I have no complaints about anything with this order!

ChattyReviewed in India on February 15, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Long wire, excellent responsiveness!
Really long wire. That was what had worried me about this controller, but the wire is a good 9 feet long. The controller itself is super responsive and connected easily to the front USB port of the console. Expensive, but worth it. No more suddenly dying batteries! Yay!
DeepReviewed in India on May 25, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Lovely
