MS reportedly spend $100million on this thing. Is it a million dollar improvement over the 360? Nope. It's actually worse. And here's why. And I don't care what ANYONE ELSE says. I have a 150k gamerscore, but I'm NOT a fanboy and will always give my honest opinion. Always.
NOTICEABLE PROS OVER 360:
- none
REPORTED IMPROVEMENTS OVER 360 CONTROLLER THAN I CAN'T REALLY TELL:
- dpad (but they had already fixed this with the transforming dpad on 360 controllers)
- thumbsticks / dead zones - I can't tell a difference. Respawn reportedly asked them to make it LESS sensitive
- Lag / latency - I really can't tell a difference yet between this and the 360 controller after playing 6 One games...
CONS:
- it's bigger/wider. that's dumb. everyone hated the original DUKE controller and loved it when the went with the S controller originally for the Japanese market. The wideness of the controller forces my hands apart which makes this WAY LESS ERGONOMIC for me to hold over time.
- I don't like the flatness and straight edge between the 2 handles. the 360 was rounded here and therefore more natural and ergonomic.
- similar to the above, the absence of the externality of the battery gives my middle fingers nowhere to rest (previously the rested up against the battery). Now they go nowhere or have to force grip the controller to hold on...
- shoulder buttons (bumpers) are CLEARLY UNDENIABLY WORSE! They only press in on 1-side, the outside, not the inside. Anyone used to being able to press the 360 bumpers anywhere you touch it will notice this and raise an eyebrow. I have no idea why they would do this. The bumpers were fine previously
- start and back were renamed to random line thingie and square shapey thingies. what in the hell is that about? are the lines supposed to be a bunch of lines on a MENU??? Then why not call it MENU. It's weird
- the dpad now only has 4 points are articulation. the original 360 had 8 (which yes would occasionally get mispressed) but now you'll have to press 2 of the points at once to get the same functionality of the 8 (if developers care about such things).
- the way the plastic casing is screwed and glued together (yes even this) is worse. it's WEAKER at the seams. The original 360 controller was completely SOLID here. I'm constantly gripping the ONE controller harder because of all the reasons above which often makes the plastic casing collapse in slightly. This sucks. I could end up breaking this thing at some point. It's not as bad as the very plasticy PS3 controller, which I feel like I could break in half, but the build is not as solid as the 360 controller.
- the "wireless" tech still forces nearly all compatible headsets to be WIRED at least in some fashion. I have no idea why MS thinks users are a fan of having a wireless controller + a wireless headset, but with a big stupid wire connecting the two. It's a problem with the ONE console in general itself, but it should mentioned here...
THE SHORT OF IT: The 360 was a flat out better controller. That being said, the ONE controller is a solid controller and will obviously work correctly. There's no reason to flunk it over nitpicks.
Review for Titanfall Controller Only:
For those of you wondering if the overpriced $64.99 Xbox One Titanfall controller includes an actual rechargable battery, it doesn't. Also, the regular batteries included with mine were DOA. Pretty lame for $65. Otherwise, it is obviously identical to the One controller. The Titanfall skin reminds me quite a bit of Mass Effect's design aesthetic and is quite beautiful.
Unrelated but also similarly lame is that the Xbox One Titanfall console bundle doesn't even include this controller or any kind of unique skin of it's own (actually the OUTER box appears to have a Titanfall skin - so your storage closet will be happy to look at it - yippy?) Pretty lame all around...I saw design skins for the console months ago, but they must not have had time to get it done...Whole thing sounds thrown together at the last minute.
Compared the pictures of the Dualshock 4 and Xbox One controllers. Assumed the Xbox One controller was the clear winner.
So I went all in and cancelled my pre-order of a Playstation 4.
After demo machines popped up for the PS4 I tried the DS4 felt better than DS3. When I went to Gamestop today I went ahead and bought a Xbox One controller because you can always use an extra controller because Xbox One's 8 controller compatibility.
Microsoft dethroned themselves for best controller.
The Xbox One controller is different than Xbox 360's controller:
- RB and LB are not the same as the Xbox 360's RB and LB.
- RB and LB buttons are not all button (only the outer side works)
- Button Layout is small.
- Smaller right and left sticks
Good things about the controller:
- Better D-pad but not best(makes a nice clicky noise now)
- Shock feedback on RT and LT triggers. (which is a very nice touch and makes all other rumble products feel less responsive)
- Good Shape
- No battery pack bulging out
- Right and Left Sticks feel better with grippy sides
This controller is not a fit for me. When comfortably holding the controller my index fingers land in the middle to inner area of the RB and LB where it is not easy to press compared to the Xbox 360.
After trying both controllers. I am in need of a Playstation 4. With the better controller for my hands Dualshock 4.
Update:
After spending more time with the Xbox One controller it has grown on me. RB and LB are no longer a problem. I hit those with the middle of my index fingers which I used to hit with the tip of my index fingers. The vibration on the triggers is a nice touch.
The major difference I found comparing the controllers is the R2 and L2 of the DS4 pinch my fingers. This has happened to me with the DS3 and they still haven't fixed this. Although the DS4 comes with rechargeable batteries built in it has short battery useage. Though the DS4 has more features Xbox One's Controller seems to be overall a better designed controller which built upon an already great controller.
Ranking Controllers:
1. Xbox One controller tied with Xbox 360 controller
1.5. DualShock 4 (coming in close behind Microsoft's 2 controllers with many new to be discovered features)
3. DualShock 3 (because it isn't close to the DS4)
