Is this Xenogears? For better or worse, no. Xenosaga? Definitely not. Xenoblade? If you've played the first, you'll recognize the combat, collection, and equipment systems, but otherwise, no. Is it an instant classic I expect to replay a dozen times in the coming years? The jury is still out, but it so far feels a bit slow and diffuse to offer a tight, itch-scratching replay experience.
What it is, however, is unmistakably Monolith. A deep, rich setting with good character narrative, mechanics which seek (largely successfully) to remix and expand established concepts, aesthetics polished no less than one would expect of the console. And, if what I've heard of the budget is true, a Monolithic aptitude for doubling and tripling down on the important elements of gameplay, world design, and mainline user experience, with most shortcomings relegated to the auxiliary mechanics and extended content. (Plus, it has action-combat in giant near-infinitely-customizable mecha.)
And it's a big world, and a big concept. Bigger and more open than some dedicated mainstream MMOs, and yet built with an almost exclusively single-player structure. This is the game's most awkward paradox. It's not quite single-player _enough_ to survive translation to a platform without dedicated MMO backing, or for that matter, without visual real-estate for the second screen content. And yet it's not MMO _enough_ to capitalize on the vast quantity of side-content and its own social system as much as the design seems to expect and invite. It's hard to imagine the game re-releasing on a platform other than WiiU without significant community-alienating mechanical and architectural changes motivated exclusively by the platform change rather than any inherent problems with the original game.
So... that makes it innately a bit of a collector's piece; history that is unlikely to be repeated and more than likely to be lost, despite how amazing the game is. And if you're going to collect, and you're going to make the investment in a WiiU for, let's face it, basically just this game, then the price jump to get the full boxed set Special Edition is a small enough fraction of your total outlay to be well worth it.

The special edition:
It's packaging makes for a great display piece, I've been asked more than once what the game is about based on the skell on the cover alone.
I really like the art on the book, great insight into the different artstyles through development. But I felt the format is somewhat wasteful in some pages. It's also a shame it's not a hardcover.
I like the sound selection in the USB, if a very limited number of tracks. I however really dislike the fact is on a USB, as it's really a pain to save on your computer, and the format they're on makes it hard for most PCs to edit their information and some devices won't even play them. It's nice the USB looks like a lifehold from the game, however.
The postcard is really cool, if only to be seen as a bonus.
Overall not one of the best special editions out there, but glad I have it as I really loved the game.
The game itself:
One of the biggest open-world games to date, seriously, the map is ridiculously huge.
Comparing it to the rest of the series, it's very different, with an enfasis on exploration, but still a JRPG at its core.
I really liked the game, and felt that it hit the mark of a truly great game once the Skells came into the equation.

This 3 star review is not for the game. Xenoblade Chronicles X is in the same league as Skyrim, or Mass Effect as far as I am concerned. I would easily rate this at 4.5-5 stars. In fact I am not even that upset with the package deal in most parts but one glaring issue drags it down.
The sound track is DRM protected and requires you to leave the USB inserted to play unless yo do a few work arounds. If you do like the game and want to get the music I suggest you ignore this package and go for the CD even if it is expensive. Also there are only 10 tracks on the USB.
If however you want to get your hands on the artbook and print you can feel safe with said purchase.

I've waited so long for this game and I am 100% impressed; Xenoblade Chronicles X takes all of the charm and magic from the original game and just slaps you in the face so hard with this giant world, loads of content, and GIANT MECHS. You don't have to play the original Xenoblade to understand this one, though you won't notice a few little touches and have to learn the gameplay mechanics; All of which can be done through the game's extensive in-game manual which does a VERY nice job teaching you things the game doesn't on its own.
As for the special edition, it's great. The art card looks so great, the special edition alternate boxart on the game case is kick-ass, the art book is lovely, and that USB... oh, man. If you're not already aware, the special edition comes with this FORMATTABLE 800MB unique USB drive which design's based on the Lifehold, that contains 10 songs from the game's OST. Problem is, it's locked behind this silly DRM executable and encrypted. Apparently, it's bugged and it causes some issues you may notice in the future.
Regardless, Xenoblade Chronicles X is a must have for any Wii U owner. Play the true GOTY of 2015.
