About the Author

Dan Abnett is a seven-times New York Times bestselling author and an award-winning comic book writer. He has written over fifty novels, including the acclaimed Gaunt’s Ghosts series, the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies, volumes of the million-selling Horus Heresy series, The Silent Stars Go By (Doctor Who), Rocket Raccoon and Groot: Steal the Galaxy, The Avengers: Everybody Wants To Rule The World, The Wield, Triumff: Her Majesty’s Hero, and Embedded. In comics, he is known for his work on The Legion of Super-Heroes, Aquaman, The Titans, Nova, Wild’s End, and The New Deadwardians. Dan Abnett is a novelsit and award-winnig comic book writer. He has written twenty-five novels for the Black Library, including the acclaimed Gaunt's Ghosts series and the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies, and with Mike Lee, the Darkblade cycle. His Black Library novel Horus Rising and his Torchwood novel Border Princes (for the BBC) were both bestsellers. He lives and works in Maidstone, Kent.

Tra tutti i romanzi basati sul mondo di Warhammer 40K, questo è sicuramente uno dei migliori da cui partire per chi, come me, si approccia per la prima volta (o quasi) a questo universo narrativo. Prima di acquistare questo libro ero un pò intimidito dall'enorme quantità di lore che si nasconde in questa ambientazione e non sapevo se leggendolo avrei potuto apprezzarne la complessità o mi sarei perso nei latinismi o nei termini specifici usati dall'autore. Fortunatamente, dopo poche decine di pagine mi sono subito ricreduto e mi sono innamorato del mondo di Warhammer 40K.

Come tutti i titoli publicati dall'editore Black Library, Xenos non esiste in versione italiana (per quanto ne so io), ma lo scoglio linguistico non è insormontabile: un livello di inglese a metà tra un B2 ed un C1 dovrebbe essere più che sufficiente per godere a pieno di questo meraviglioso libro e sicuramente non si avvicina nemmeno lontanamenti a opere ben più difficili (linguisticamente parlando) come Neuromante, di W. Gibson.

La storia, primo capitolo della trilogia di Eisenhorn, narra le vicende di un Inquisitore di nome Gregor Eisenhorn che fa quello che gli Inquisitori sanno fare meglio: sventare macchinazioni Eretiche ai danni dell'Imperatore purificando col fuoco interi mondi. Il racconto è molto piacevole e descrive in modo accessibile il mondo di Warhammer 40K, senza scendere troppo nei dettagli tattici delle battaglie per le quali il franchise è famoso, ma piuttosto focalizzandosi sulle vicende di pochi personaggi. L'autore delinea un profilo psicologico dei personaggi decisamente approfondito sebbene vagamente statico, e racconta una storia che parla di cospirazioni, intrighi, infiltrazione, fanatismo militare e tecnologie futuristiche dalle tinte oscure e inquietanti.

La stampa è di buona qualità, ottima leggibilità, l'impaginazione sempre corretta e non ci sono errori di battitura nè grossolane sbavature. Bellissime oltretutto le copertine dell'intera trilogia

Decisamente una lettura consigliata per chi si avvicino a questo mondo per la prima volta, e per chiunque abbia una conoscenza dell'inglese discreta e un'interesse per una fantascienza estremamente particolare caratterizzata dalla forte impronta militare e dal fanatismo pseudoreligioso.
