The footbed in the Xero does feel good.
There are lots of adjustment points to get the fit right.
There are little plastic buckles where the straps meet that can tend to dig into your foot if not adjusted properly.
WATCH THE VIDEO on the Xeroshoes website on how to adjust these properly.
When I first put them on, I tried to break them in slowly, but I was very sore. My calves cramped and it was clear that I was walking differently than I had before. It took a while to get the straps adjusted perfectly so I didn't feel toe cleft pressure or have the heal strap drop off, but once I got it, puting on or taking off my shoes was near instant.
Now I've been wearing some form on Xeroshoes for more than a year, and the Amuri Cloud are my favorites. They go on and off quickly, I never have any foot pain of any kind, and the idea that I once thought I needed a shoe with arch support is laughable to me.
These shoes aren't for everyone, but I get a ton of compliments on the street when I wear the bright blue and green ones, and no one seems to notice my dark ones--which is also fine. My feet are very happy and they feel fantastic. And one of every color of Amuri Cloud is less than one pair of good conventional shoes. I still keep some conventional shoes around for special purposes, but 90% of the time I wear these (I even keep slippah socks and wear them in the California Winter).
If you buy them, make sure you watch the video on finding the perfect fit on the xeroshoes site. If you don't get the straps just right, it doesn't work well. But once you get them right: you are done. NO more work.
UPDATE: Have been wearing these daily for a couple weeks. The rubber heel strap stuff has come off (expected). The sandals do require a decent amount of adjustment. Though, this is something many people complain about. First, we are not used to a flop that has any sense of adjustment, even the high-dollar ones. These are rugged and a uniquely versatile design. Overall, irreplaceable in form an function for those who wear flops daily. BUT! THESE ARE AT BEST A POOR RUNNER. I was a U.S. Marine for almost a decade and ran as a hobby before that, I still enjoy running both long distance and short distance and have been running in zero-drop minimalist shoes for years. I really wanted these to work as a durable and affordable runner. They just don't. They are just like you would think, running in flipflops. The thong is torture after a couple miles, it is pulling this way and then pulling that. The noise of flipflops while running can be ignored but, the discomfort cannot. Most runners can identify with pushing through discomfort and pain but, there are likely few that would inflict discomfort upon themselves.
You wonder why the company has completely reinvented the design for a more performance oriented upper and the irreplaceable 5000 mile minimalist lower. If looking for a runner, buy the Z-Trek. If looking for the most comfortable, adjustable, lightweight and durable flipflop buy the Amuri's. Just use discernment in your desired purpose.
First: The lacing WILL take you time to get right, and there are easier lacing systems out there, for example, Luna Sandals and Earth Runner shoes. Wonderful products, but you'll also pay more for them.
Second: These sandals are designed and built for people who are really into the experience and personal development found in going barefoot. Yep, personal development. To really "get" these shoes, I think most people will need to (re)learn how to walk and run in the way we evolved to; that is, in a way that is forgiving to the joints and makes use of our natural shock-absorbing system (toes, arches, hamstrings). These shoes offer a learning process: if you're hurting your knees and slapping your feet around like you're trying to put out a fire, then unless you want to take the opportunity to learn how NOT to do that (which is both lots of fun and enormously beneficial for your body), then these shoes may not be for you. For my nieces, Xero Shoes appeared to be basically the same as Walmart flipflops except less cushiony and more work to make them fit, so why bother? Indeed.
Finally, regarding keeping your feet warm, I'm not joking. The foam rubber "Cloud" material is not only very comfortable and makes the sandals float, but it is an excellent insulator. These shoes are much warmer than my old pair. It's winter and I wear them around the house rather than socks -- the bottom feels warm, as if we have heated floors.Read more ›
