It was very reasonably priced, especially for a color laser. The Amazon price is very good too.
The toner cartridges have about the same consumption rate as the ones for my HP color laser but cost less. (My only gripes with them so far is that my normal office supply dealer doesn't carry them and they don't seem to be readily available off-the-shelf at the major office supply chains.)
At 24 pounds, the printer weights just a little more than half my HP laserjet. It's also got a nice, small footprint, so it doesn't need a lot of space. Compared to most other laser printers, I'd go ahead and say this thing is as close to portable as you're likely to get.
The weight was actually my main concern. I run a dealer's table at several science fiction conventions and do a lot of printing on the road. Since I also have a seriously screwed-up back, it was past time to get something I could lift in and out of my car easily AND would still be as cost-effective to operate as the 45-pound HP behemoth I've been dragging around.
So far, the Xerox is doing well on all counts. The print quality is slightly better than my HP on photographs, about the same on text.
It came out of the box in perfect condition. Setting up was easy, but Windows Vista does not have drivers for it. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the same is true of Windows 7, though the printer is compatible with both operating systems. (If you're a Linux user, this printer will also work for you. Assuming you can believe what it says on the box, anyway.) The printer comes with the drivers on a CD, though - no worries there.Read more ›
I think the Xerox Phaser 6010 actually uses an array of tiny LEDS instead of a laser. It still uses dry toner instead of liquid ink. As far as I can tell it prints at least as well as my previous HP Laser Printer and color photos are somewhat better - though not as good as a printer made for printing photos. The printer has two ports - USB and wired Ethernet (RJ45 jack). I used the Ethernet port. It wasn't too difficult to connect up. The advantage of using the Ethernet port over the USB port is that if you share the printer you can do so directly over your Ethernet system and you don't have to have one of your computers always on to act as the printer server.
Good print quality in B/W and color
Wired Ethernet port built in
Re-manufactured toner assemblies available at low cost via Amazon
Smaller printer footprint
The not quite so good:
Does not have Bluetooth wireless printer I/O so my Apple IOS devices do not see it despite being on the same network.
Once you unbox the printer and add the paper, the paper tray sticks out the front 4 1/4 inches which increases the actual footprint of the printer on the shelf or table.
Update - I have been using this printer for a month now. I have gone through the initial black toner cartridge (sometimes I print out manuals I download of up to 100+ pages). I have not had a single paper jam in this time and replacing the toner cartridge was simple (buy re-manufactured or generic ones cheap from Amazon). The more I use this printer the happier I am that I replaced my old HP color laser printer with this one.Read more ›
I purchased the 6010 with Ethernet, plugged it into the wireless router in my network, loaded it up with paper (toner was pre-installed) and booted up my Mac.
My Mac immediately recognized the printer, installed the driver, and I was off to the races.
My first color printed page popped out quickly, with crisp text and good quality graphics.
Since then, the printer has been a reliable workhorse for everything I've needed. It works well with a variety of stock from 20 pound "daily paper" to heavier Hammermill 60 pound Color Copy Digital Cover. Every printout has been clean and fast, setup was quick and flawless, the printer consumes little power (and wakes up nearly instantly from "power save" mode), and whenever I need a printout, I just hit "print." It's exactly as a personal color printer should be. The low price and the quality construction are just nice bonuses.
After less than two years of use, this printer stopped working completely. It had already been having very strange issues with the toner cartridges making loud squeaking and grinding noises, and finally it gave an error that I could not resolve by working with tech support or any online forums. I was going to have to pay a Xerox repair person to come out at fix it, and it just wasn't worth the cost. The toner cost is just so high that I couldn't justify putting more money into this printer.
