I'm printing photos. The quality is at least on the level of the low-level inkjects (for ex. Canon 2500, I have) and way superior to my Brother 3070CW. Paper quality is important, 98% whiteness or better is preferable. PostScript is very slow, force your PC to use PCL-6. Color balance may need some work to go from good images to excellent (I'm still on the way, that's why I taked to customer support). Probably, this printer needs custom ICC profiles to achieve professional photo quality with perfect colorometry. I see such potential.
This printer is rated at 24 pages per minute, but right out of the box, when I printed the same jobs that I printed on my old Oki at 12 pages per minute were coming out at about 2 pages per minute.
I called Xerox, going with the assumption that something must be wrong, and although they showed me a way to increase performance by using a different network setting, it was still not as fast as my older printer. Then, they mentioned that one of the root causes was that the printer only has 256 MB of RAM, and they said I could get a boost in speed by purchasing their "Productivity Kit", which adds an additional 515 MB, allowing the printer to handle color pages with graphics better.
For the record, the pages I printed were not very complex. Just a MS Word document with regular black text, but with my color logo on the top. The logo about 1 inch tall, and actually slowed the printer down to the point that it would print a 14 page document in just about 7 minutes.
While I was waiting for the memory upgrade, I ended up with several other issues that I couldn't resolve, including variations in the print quality whenever there was text near a logo, and the last straw was when I tried to print on 65 lb cover stock, and 110 lb Index cardstock, which is something I do often. The pages on anything thicker than regular paper curled practically into a circle. In fact, had I used legal paper, I guarantee the paper would be a complete circle.
I tried putting 20 pounds of books on the paper for 10 hours and when I removed the books, the paper immediately sprung back into a circle. There simply was no way to undo the curl, without using an iron... which was how I fixed it. However, ironing 100+ pages, one-by-one, with an iron every day is not an option.
So the bottom line is I still do recommend this printer. It's a great value, but it is not suitable for people who do a lot of printing that uses graphics (unless you upgrade the memory), and for anyone who may need to print on thicker paper from time to time.
