P.s. I attached some pics taken with the rear camera of the phone. The first three are in portrait mode and the others aren't nor do any of them have HDR on.
UPDATE (12/31/2017): The Android O update came in yesterday and it improves several aspects of the phone such as the battery life, smoother animations and (best of all) now it has support for Quick Charge. I guess we'll have to wait for an official quick charger from Xiaomi to come out, but I suppose it could work with any from other brands.
I really don't write reviews ever, but I felt since I gave this phone a solid test drive to help anyone in the U.S. who's thinking about buying it.
I read on countless websites that this only has one LTE band that works with U.S. AT&T, but I thought I would buy it anyone and give it a try. Indeed, it can connect to 4g--you do have to do some finagling like going into settings and toggling 3g and 4g back and forth; and then entering *#*#4636#*#* and going into Testing > Phone Information and forcing it to be LTE/UTMS--but it's a little spotty and after you fall into 3g, it seems to never want to bump back up into 4g. Also, strangely when I made calls, it drops down to 3g. All this is extremely annoying; I probably could have lived with it, but given how neurotic I am, I would probably spend half my life checking to see if I'm getting 4g signal at the moment.
SO, all that is to say, don't buy it if you want consistent LTE coverage in the U.S. The non-phone stuff is so good: stock, vanilla Android, quick and snappy, good camera, tons of RAM and a good chipset for $200!
Sending it back today.
Hope this helps someone!
Turned on the phone was on 7.1. Got an update about 700MB put it on Android Oreo with March 1 security patch. All aluminum build with a wonderful dual camera system. Like please for $199, you can get this phone for your kids and they would have a more exciting phone than an iPhone 6s. Fingerprint is phenomenal, screen is great. The only con i can really think about is the fact that major case manufacturers do not care much for it. But u can get a Spigen and be happy. No Otterboxes tho.
There is no user manual or any instructions on how to set the phone up or use it. The phone comes with something called AndroidOne, which is the stock android build with no enhancements made by Xiaomi. So, they decided that a user manual was not really required since the GUI is dictated by Google, not by Xiaomi. However, a small user manual that at least describes the physical features of the phone would have been nice. For instance, I had to look up youtube videos in order to figure out how to insert my sim card and a microSD card into the phone.
Latest version of Android - AndroidOne program ensures that this phone gets OTA updates to the latest version of Android out there. This phone comes with Android 8.0.0, and an update to 8.1 is imminent
Dual-sim capability - this is not very useful for me, but it is absolutely essentially for others
Tethering and hotspot capable - you can set the phone up to be a wi-fi hotspot to which you can hook up your laptop and other wi-fi connected devices. You can use the cell phone's wireless connection to access the internet on your other devices
Very fast - Snapdragon 625 processor running 8 cores at 2 GHz makes the phone fast and the GUI slick and responsive. Apps load up fast and respond quickly. The phone reboots in just under a minute - and I have about 150 apps loaded on it
Very good sound and call quality - call quality is very good with crystal clear sound. Both the speakers (earpiece as well as speaker) as well as microphone are very good and you will have no problem communicating with the other party. The speaker is very loud, so if you prefer to use the speakerphone capability, that will be clear and loud as well. Using a bluetooth headphone is also very easy, and the sound quality remains good
Large storage and RAM space - with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, you will find it hard to fill this device up even if you don't use an external micro SD card. With my 150 apps loaded, the internal storage is about one-third full on my phone right now. The lack of bloatware (which I talk about below) helps in that respect also
Very good screen - Crisp, clear and vibrant. If you turn off adaptive brightness and set the screen to maximum brightness, you should have no problem using it even in bright sunlight. Of course, it also comes with an adaptive brightness setting as well as a NightLight feature that turns off the blues after sunset to protect your eyes from blue light that can cause sleep problems. The glass has also been quite fingerprint and smudge-resistant so far
Fingerprint reader - Very quick recognition of fingerprints. The phone can be unlocked in as little as 0.1 seconds by passing a finger over the fingerprint reader at the back of the phone. You can wake the phone up and unlock it simultaneously just by putting your finger on the fingerprint reader when the screen is off instead of pressing the power button to turn the screen on before unlocking the phone
Good camera - dual cameras on the back and a good selfie camera in the front. All the cameras are pretty high-resolution ones. The stock camera app is adequate, but does not provide a plethora of customization options. I am not a photography expert. It takes pictures that I find quite acceptable. For a more formal review of the cameras, I suggest you google for more expert reviews
Good antennae - has no problem staying connected to my wireless carrier or my wi-fi. My previous ASUS phone had trouble with my wireless carrier. The GPS tracking is also very fast and accurate. In addition, the phone has an IR transmitter at the top that enables the phone to be used as remote control for household appliances such as TV's, DVD players, etc. It took me a bit of research to figure out that the two holes at the top of the phone were actually part of the IR transmitter. The lack of a quickstart guide with a basic description of the physical device is not a great idea
Decent battery - It is somewhat small at just 3080 mAh, but it has lasted me through the whole day in all cases so far even with somewhat excessive screen usage because I have been busy setting the phone up and tinkering with it all day long. However, as the phone and battery age, or if you are a power user and/or gamer, the small battery may become an issue. And the battery is not replaceable. One advantage of a smaller battery though: the phone charges from zero to 100% in just about 90 minutes
Almost no bloatware - this is the advantage of AndroidOne. This is stock android (in my case, Android 8.0.0), and there are a couple of Xiaomi apps, but my previous ASUS phone came with more than a dozen ASUS apps that could not be uninstalled. This phone comes very clean
No instructions or guide
Inconsistent package contents - it is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get, apparently
No NFC - If you are addicted to paying with Google pay without pulling out a physical card, you won't like this phone
No selfie-camera flash
AndroidOne launcher is a dud - it is not stable and does not have great options for customization. I will eventually use a third party launcher after I do some more research
Stock everything - Also seems to mean barebones everything. If you want a pure android experience the way Google envisions it, you are in luck. But if you are used to a certain design because of having used phones from a particular manufacturer for a while, it may take some time to adjust to the GUI on this phone
No removable battery - the entire phone is sealed, and you can't replace the battery or any other component. If and when the battery becomes inadequate, you are left with the ecologically unfriendly option of ditching the entire phone or the expensive option of paying for someone to open up the phone and replace the battery (if replacement batteries are even available)
You can't use 2 sims with an external microSD card - the phone has a popout tray for loading either one sim card and a microSD card, or 2 sim cards for use in dual-sim mode. But you can't load both 2 sims as well as a microSD card - at least not without third party adapters. There are adapters for everything, apparently
In general, I like Android 8.0.0. It is very feature-rich and I particularly like the expandable notifications, and the ability to grant and revoke specific permissions to specific apps. This is a good improvement over previous versions of Android. However, I don't want to spend time talking about the OS rather than the phone itself. After all this is not a review of Android, but of this phone.
Bottomline: It is difficult to find a phone at this pricepoint that is as capable of this one. Good screen size and quality, fingerprint reader, dual cameras, large RAM and internal storage, fast processor, bloatware-free stock android experience. If there is another phone with these features from a good manufacturer at this pricepoint, I must have missed it in my 3 months of research. It is not a $1000 phone, and as long as you recognize that there are always going to be features in a $1000 phone that you can't get in a $200 phone, you will be happy with this phone. If you want a $1000 phone for $200 you will be disappointed.
If you have any specific questions that I have not addressed in the review above, please feel free to ask them in the comments and I will try to answer them.
