I started a new diet a few months back and I heard that a fitness tracker would be a great tool to have for the journey. My friends swore by the Fitbit but the price was a turn-off for me. I watched a few video reviews on the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 and I decided to try it out before I dropped $$$$ on something I might not like. I've been using the MyFitnessPal android app on my Samsung S8 and I wanted something that would sync with it. The Mi Band syncs with Google Fit which in turn syncs with MyFitnessPal which is as good as its going to get. I found that the step counter was very close to Google Fit and I had no issues with the syncs. Bluetooth connectivity was quick right out the box. I like the Xiaomi Mi Fit app you have to download....it does the trick but I wish it had more oomph. I paid and downloaded 2 other apps that provided continuous heart rate monitoring.....in the end I went back to the stock Xiomi App and have had a pretty good user experience. Battery life is truly excellent. I'm at 79% and I've been rocking this unit on my wrist continuously for about 3 weeks now. The sleep monitoring is good and informative....I have no frame of reference but I've heard that FitBit is the standard for sleep tracking. I don't mind taking manual heart readings and I like the minimalist uncluttered design of the interface. I didn't want another watch on my wrist so this works out perfectly for me. This is a wear and forget unit and that was a big plus for me. I'm very satisfied with my $35 purchase which has exceeded my expectations. I haven't taken the band off since its first charge......we're talking 3 weeks of showering, working out, sweating etc.........Zero Issues. I would venture to say that the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 is a great affordable fitness tracker whose performance and build rival units much more expensive.

UPDATE - NOT HONORING WARRANTY: Not Perfect, But Totally Worth The Money!

(see update below) I did quite a bit of research before buying this MiBand 2. To make a long story short, I really am glad I got it! I've been wearing it 24/7 for nearly two weeks and I have to say it fits well, looks decent, and works nicely. I don't put it underwater, but it goes through the shower just fine. Also, it only uses about 40% of the battery in one week - and it does track my sleep so it's on all night. Impressive battery life! I also like the do not disturb setting (you can set the times) and the setting where it shows the time when you lift your wrist to look at the time. It also syncs via Bluetooth very well with my iPhone 8+ - I sync it every day and I have not had a single problem yet. Finally, it can send alerts from your phone (text notification, call notification, etc.) if you have your phone's Bluetooth on and close by.

It's not perfect, however. The app is good, but could be improved. It would take awhile to explain this, but to keep it short I'd give the app a 7 out of 10. Very usable, but needs some updates (which will probably happen). Also, the step count isn't as exact as other counters. It is adjustable to some extent - after a run or walk you can correct the distance if you want. The sleep monitor isn't 100% accurate either, but it's close enough for me - it does tell you when you sleep and when you wake, so you at least have a decent idea. Finally, the HR monitor works but isn't always accurate. Having said that, getting a consistently accurate heart rate from the top of the wrist isn't always easy! But again, it works most of the time and it's good enough for me.

Basically, at the end of the day, this MiBand 2 is very much worth the price! For around thirty bucks I have a very good fitness tracker that works very well. It's not perfect, but it's very good!

UPDATE AUGUST 1 2018 - My MiBand2 Tracker unit keeps falling out of the band because the plastic isn't doing its job. I have been very careful with the band. There is a 12-month warranty on this product, but the seller is not returning my emails at all after several weeks. So beware - the warranty might not work out!

The magic is in the apps!

I decided to use this device for 3 months before writing anything because many reviews are written with just first impressions. A proper evaluation means wearing it every day in conjunction to using the available apps that make sense of its data and then making a conclusion. There's the Mi Fit application (No $) which provides basic information about movement activity, heart rate, sleep behavior, and collating daily information for weight management. It's a rather simple yet complete app that works well when paired to your Mi device. A secondary app ($) provides a real-time running report of your heart rate which gives immediate feedback especially important during a workout/exercise. Both authorized apps work as advertised although I've had connection issues with the secondary heart monitor app (they charge an initial fee) where it had to be reloaded into my phone. But the important thing was the Mi Fitness Band. It not only provides the time replacing your wristwatch but acts as a pedometer and measures your heart rate. That's it! The rest of the magic happens in the app. There are a multitude of band possibilities to appeal to your fashion sense but comes with a comfortable silicone wristband that's easy to put on. The device keeps a charge for many days without the need for recharging and comes with a dedicated charger/cable. I found it to be reliable and managed to stay connected via Bluetooth with no dropouts. I'm still using it daily, even sleeping with it on at night to receive sleep information. It's a good, easy to use device well worth the cost that I honestly can find no flaws with.
