Editorial Reviews

When Mexican vocalist Ximena Sariñana released her debut solo album, Mediocre, in 2008, Rolling Stone gave it four stars and praised it as "one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones' Come Away With Me." Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for Sariñana, who had risen to fame in her homeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years. "In Mexico, people believed in me as an artist," says the fully bilingual 25-year-old. So when she began thinking about recording an album in English she was confronted with a tough decision: "Either stay in my country, where everyone knows who I am, or start from scratch and convince people that I'm worth it." She chose the latter.

The result is a collection of songs that showcase her deep, striking voice, smart, thoughtful lyrics and offbeat personality. "I think of albums as Polaroid pictures of who I was at that given moment," says Sariñana. "All the songs are a bit dark. They capture a sort of general doom that I try to compensate with humor," she says. The lead single, "Different," opens with a playful whistle but is really an apology to listeners "about maybe not expressing myself clearly because of my different nationality," while "Bringing Us Down" was inspired by the poem "Candles" by Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy and deals with growing older and looking back at the fading past. The album not only reflects Sariñana's wise-beyond-her years demeanor, but also the kind of sonic growth and experimentation expected from a risk-taker.

I have never heard of this artist before. I don't speak Spanish nor have really spent any time listening to Spanish music albums. When I saw her video on VH1 I was entranced. It was so cute and I love the tone of her voice. I looked all over for it at the music stores near me and they just did not have it. So, my husband logged onto Amazon and ordered it for me. I listen to new CD's in my office when I am working on paperwork. Since I put this in my player three days ago, I have probably listened to it 30 times. I really just enjoy it. I like her folksy style.

I had never heard of Ximena Sarinana until I went to see Sia in concert recently. Ximena was the first opening act of the night. I was used to opening acts not being all that talented, but I really liked her performance. She engaged and interacted with the audience. Her background set was minimal, allowing her to focus primarily on her music. Her brother provided musical support to her performance. Her show was upbeat and interactive. After I heard her live, I decided to pick up this album at the show. I was not disappointed. I listen to her album in my car very often and was very pleased with what I heard. She has an organic sound not relying heavily on auto tune or studio produced sound for this album. I had the opportunity to meet her at the show as well and she was very nice and appreciative. She is worth listening to. Each song has its own style and character in a good way. You will not hear her played over and over on FM mainstream radio and that in itself is a good thing for this talented artist.

Ximena's debut album is one of my absolute favorite CDs in my collection. I could listen to that CD a thousand times (probably already have) and never grow tired of it. So, naturally, I was very excited when I heard about her follow-up album. This album, on the other hand, might take a few more listens before I've warmed up to it completely. This is Ximena's first album in English, but not her first time recording English tracks. I can say that she does a pretty good job with her English songs, but it's not as good as her Spanish songs. Lyrically, this album is far more simplistic than Ximena's debut. That's not necessarily a bad thing because simple can be beautiful, but with some of songs like "Different" and "Wrong Miracle", I was expecting something deeper. "Different" is the only track I dislike. It's a little obnoxious when you've listened to more than five times. "Shine Down" is the album's lone stand-out track. The music and beat and stellar and the lyrics are cryptic, yet fun. "Echo Park" has a lot of synthesized beats and instruments, but it doesn't feel like it fits with the rest of the album. "Tu y Yo" is the only Spanish track on the album. I wish Ximena had put another Spanish track on the album because I don't really care for this one. Lyrically, it's pretty good, but the instruments and computerized beats distracted from the beauty of the song. On the plus side, as a whole, the album is very listenable. I got through it without skipping any tracks. However, my only complaint of the album as a whole is that it doesn't have a lot of standout tracks besides "Shine Down". I was hoping there would be more songs with the same vibe as "Shine Down", but unfortunately that didn't happen. "Tomorrow" is another nearly perfect song. Ximena proved that she can craft a pretty great English album, but this one unfortunately does not surpass timeless perfection that is her debut.

I had been aware of this Mexican artist since her debut, but never got around to buying "Mediocre"...then saw she recorded her 2nd album in English and it's on Warners...I'm a sucker for that roster. Then Jim Farber gave a raving review of this record in NY's Daily News, like 4 stars, calling it a "smart new wave gem"...then my friend bought it & loved it...then saw the vidclip for "Different" in VH1's Top 20 Countdown & was blown away...so I bought it and I am amazed...

Compared to her more piano singer/songwriter debut "Mediocre" (like a Spanish-sung Fiona Apple recording), this thing is much more smart catchy new wave/synthpop...and I was trying to pinpoint her dry vocal style because she reminded me of someone and I got it...she's like Liz Phair, if Liz Phair had more range and could actually sing...I LIKE Liz but don't love Liz because Liz is too monotonous when she sings. Not our Ximena...she has more melody and still exudes dry humour and is able to convey a variety of emotions in a small space...not many can do that with so little.

All 12 tunes are gems...besides "Different"...other faves are "Echo Park" and "Wrong Miracle"...besides Shakira, Ximena is one of the few Spanish-based artists who are able to write good English tunes from scratch...not Spanish songs translated into English. And what's cool is Ximena's record sounds like the work of someone English or an Anglophile American, not from Mexico...then again, there are plenty of offkilter alternative Latin artists like Cafe Tacuba, Residente Calle 13, and the classic Nirvana-esque Soda Stereo.

I just hope Ximena makes more great records like this in any language...we need more and more evolution...her future is indeed bright...
