NDAS HDD Enclosure

There are plenty of reviews on all the technical capabilities so I am just going to skip all that and get to the quality of the case. It is decently built but it is not perfect. I put my hard drive in the case and connected the power and data. When I shut the case it loosened the data cable. When I plugged it in to the computer or the router it would show up but it had weird letters and I was never able to access it. I decided to open it up to begin troubleshooting it. I almost had to break it to get it open. I caused permanent damage to the enclosure by bending the locking flaps so far that they did not return to there original position. I was so fed up with messing with the case that I got a pair of pliers and held the flaps while taking a torch to them. They look a little messed up but they work. Anyway to sum it up it is a good case but it is a pain in the butt to get open so pay attention to how it closes and I hope you have better luck than I did if you have to ever open it.

IDE only, not for SATA

The price was right, the product looks fine, but nowhere in the description is this product identified as being for either IDE or SATA (well, it's for IDE). Shame on me for being hasty in not catching this detail: I needed an enclosure for a 1T SATA HDD that I already have.
For the price, I'll keep it around as a way to fiddle with the surplus IDE drives I have, but none of them have the juice to be the home network backup drive I was hoping to build.
Another $50+ and I'll have the correct SATA-compatible NAS-like enclosure.
The merchant did a good job packaging and shipping expeditiously, so I cannot fault them in that regard.

Not bad

When I purchased this it was my second. I already owned a complete unit purchased from Ximeta. They both failed eventually after about 18 months. They seem to have an issues with computers hibernation. When you bring your pc out of hibernation an initially try to access the drive it will fail, but second attempt will succeed. This becomes an issue if you have something set to automatically save to the drive as it will fail first attempt and will require a second. Beyond that it worked ok if not a bit slow at times.

So Far So Great!

This drive absolutely rocks. The enclosure is the way to go. I picked up an 80gb drive elsewhere for cheap and stuck it in. I didnt have any trouble installing the drive into the ximeta enclosure. Others have said that its a tight fit and that some of the screws for the drive dont screw down all the way. I found it a tight fit but hardly impossible. The screws will screw down if you align them properly and apply some force.
Incidentally it came with Acronis True Image 9.0 on the enclosed CD. Thats not bad at all.
Also incidentally you cannot connect usb and network cables to it at the same time. Its one or the other, tho you can swap back and forth.
There was no need to plug in the usb cable; the network connection seemed every bit as fast. Probably faster.
Installation was a breeze; i skipped the enclosed CD and went to the ximeta website for the latest software. Download, unzip, install. It walks you through everything.Nothing much to do: just enter the codes that they give you when it asks for them. Then it asks you if you want to mount the drive, say yes. A Windows dialog pops up; tell it to search online automatically for the best SCSI driver, or point it to the ximeta CD. Either way works fine.
Thats it. It mounts and gives itself a drive letter which you can see in 'my computer'. It behaves JUST LIKE AN INTERNAL DRIVE - AND JUST AS FAST. A 35mb folder got copied in about 35 seconds. WOW. This is via WIFI!!!
Its a great way to do nightly laptop backups without having to plug any cables in. Also a great way to share info among other computers on the same local network. Just fantastic. I have not seen any of the slowdowns when connecting via wifi that others have mentioned. Maybe getting the latest drivers from the website did the trick in my case.
I like that one cannot connect to it from outside the local network (its not an ftp drive). I also like that without installing the driver one cannot connect to it even on the local network. Its an extra layer of security and privacy, which is what makes it a superb backup drive and private data sharing drive. If you want a public server, get a regular NAS drive. Thats not what this is. This is -- in effect -- functionally the same as having a "wireless usb drive" that can be optionally shared among your computers. Thats all it is, and in that role it is SUPERB. As fast as an internal drive and behaves just like an internal drive.

Software doesn't support 64 bit OS.

I received this today and it was easy to mount an old 80 GB drive. Connections are stright forward (network install). Software worked great with my Windows XP machine but not with my 64 bit Windows 7 OS. I had to download a new software package from a third party site. For a 64 bit setup download from [...].

Once I did that it worked great.

Perfect Network Drive for a small home network

Best solution for my 2 computer home network. I store all my photos and some data on this drive where they are accessible to both the desktop and laptop.

I also do not need access to that data every time I use the computers, so I can turn off the drive. As part of installation, a small SCSI like interface is installed on each computer, and puts a small icon on your task bar.

To access drive, turn on drive, click on small task bar icon and select "Mount > Read/write". To turn off drive, select "Unmount", then shut down drive. If a file is open, a message warning says that it cannot unmount, allowing you to close any open file or process. No files lost when you remember this simple sequence.

Oh, and the reason for 5 stars. This thing is FAST, with no discernible difference from direct mounted 7200RPM internal drives. Quiet too. Plus only five minutes to install PATA hard disk and you're ready to go.

NOT SATA

I bought this without realizing that it was not a SATA enclosure, you must look at the additional tech details to see that. The enclosure seems to be of good quality and the price is really good for a NAS enclosure. So, if you don't need SATA then this should be a good option for you. I have nothing negative to say, just make sure you read the details as I did not.
