The story is free of strong language and sex, so it is appropriate for the younger reader. I'd rate it as a 4-Star for the target audience. It wasn't much more than an "OK" 3-Star for me. Since it was categorized properly as a teen read, it gets 4 Stars.
The story centers around Xoe, a high school student whose life is turned upside down when she encounters werewolves, vampires, and demons, creatures she never thought existed. Her life goes completely off the rails, though, when she finds out her father is a demon and she therefore has super-human powers. Xoe has to learn--quickly--how to respond to all of this before her world--and her friends--are completely destroyed.
I enjoyed these books. The best part of them by far is Xoe's sassy, sarcastic narration. The plots are straightforward--there are no end-of-the-book surprises. The author hasn't tried to throw in twists just to throw in twists. In the same way, the good guys and the bad guys are clearly marked. You don't really wonder if so-and-so is on Xoe's side or not...most of the time. I would have liked a little more ambiguity in this respect, actually, just to strengthen the plot. I also found places where a good editor might have tightened up the narration, and there were a lot of missing commas and other punctuation errors, but after a while I was able to ignore those and go with the flow of the story, which was mostly a lot of fun.
I didn't expect to like these books as much as I did. I'm glad I got them and I have even caved and bought Book 4, because the set up for this book at the end of Book 3 made me want to know what happens next!
These are not the best supernatural fiction I have read, but they are good for what they are. If you like strong heroines with a hefty side of snarky humor, you might really enjoy this series.
My sincere hope is that the author refined her writing style (and invested in a good editor) for the remainder of the series, because the story has potential- it just was not fully developed and realized up to this point.
Mid-grade level- with a little bit of gore.
