Go to the sound and audio device of Windows Control Panel to check if the playback default device is set to Xonar DGX Audio Device, instead of other onboard AC97 or HDA codec device. If it’s not, please set it to Xonar DGX Audio Device and restart your application. The S/PDIF protocol specification (IEC-60958) can only carry 2-channel PCM data or non-PCM AC3/DTS data. So, when a user selects PCM output for S/PDIF, the Xonar sound card will always deliver 2 channel PCM data through the S/PDIF output port

Sound card is great, installation was a nightmare.

The sound card itself is excellent. Awesome audio quality, and the surround sound in game is phenomenal. The reason it got a star off, however, is that it took me an hour and a half to install the dang thing, and I am a pretty tech savy ex IT person. I've been building computers for a while and have never had this much trouble installing something.

But for future purchasers here's some advice (I wish someone had told me this). First, disable onboard sound in the BIOS. Then uninstall ALL SOUND DRIVERS (Yes, even AMD and NVIDIA install sound drivers). THEN you can install the card. If you don't do the other things first, windows will not recognize your device and will not let you install drivers.

Absolutely best Sound Card for the price.. No question. If you are looking for a Sound Card in the Sub $50 price range.. Buy this.

I am a Network engineer, with a CS Degree, have been building computers since I was 10 yrs old, etc.. (So I know a good product when I come across it, esp. for the price).

You can choose to believe my credentials if you will.. I understand it is "online" -- Point is this card has a fantastic Signal to Noise level, built in amplifier, superb chipset to any "on-board" audio -- I personally replaced a very good motherboards audio (Asus Z87-Pro) with this card.

A few things this will do for you:

1) If you have a headset that the microphone is too quiet and you are always fiddling with settings in teamspeak, gaming, ventrilo, skype, etc... This card will VERY likely correct this issue for you. It did for all the headsets/mics I have that were too quiet.

2) This card will improve the audio quality of any headset from the cheapest of them, to the most expensive 7.1 headset on the market (Over on board audio).

3) The Amplifier is not too drastic, but it's enough to allow for a cleaner signal at a lower "volume" level which translates into a better sound quality and for detailed directional sounds to come through much more audible. (IE: Footsteps of your enemy in a FPS game, or the nuances of music, etc.)

4) This card is PCI-E -- Note the Slot, approximately 1" for this to fit. It will NOT fit in a PCI slot, but there is a PCI version that is a few dollars cheaper and does the exact same thing if you need it here: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-XONAR-Headphone-Audio-Card/dp/B0045JHJSS

5) This card DOES have TRUE 5.1 surround sound outputs. It has analog outputs for your Front speakers, another analog output for your Side speakers (and rear would go on this), and a separate analog output for your Sub(s) (3 in total).

6) The card has SPDIF (Digital Fiber Optic Audio Out) should you choose to use this/need this for your setup.

7) This card has automatic front to rear and rear to front jack detection. Even my on board audio required me to click "ok" when I plugged in a microphone / headset to the front jack -- This card auto senses this and you don't have to do anything. Quite convenient.

8) This card has EXCELLENT Software called Xonar DGX Audio Center -- Which has such things as: Volume, Smart volume, Mute, DSP Modes (HF and GX), Audio channels (2 channels to 8 channels), Sample rate (Up to PCM 96 KHz) , Analog Out options (headphones, speaker options/config etc), SPDIF Out options, Dolby Headphone Simulation of 5.1 and/or 7.1 (and it WORKS lol). It has a Mixer. It has Effects built in. It has Karaoke Settings built in (why, I don't know), It has "FlexBass" set in.. Basically a cross over which boosts your bass levels with the amplifier and frequency you set it at. It has AEC (Accoustics Echo Cancellation) -- This will allow you to use a microphone with your desktop SPEAKERS going.. and cancel out the audio. It has VocalFX (As the name implies Vocal options. -- Such as 3D Games VoiceEX, Local VoiceEx, For VOIP (Skype, etc) - Home, Bathroom, hall, etc -- "Magic Voice" -- Default, Monster, Cartoon, Male, Female (Changes your voice to those things.

9) Don't bother with the CD it comes with -- Just go to the Asus website, find the Card and download the driver and software there. Install the one .exe/rar (compressed) file setup and you are done and can configure with the aforementioned Xonar DGX Audio Center.

I have a review of the card on Youtube,.. under the youtube account ikoslog -- or Gizmo Gallery -- But there are MANY reviews of this card there and most all are steller praising reviews.

Lastly, if you have On-Board audio.. Or any of the headset problems.. Or some annoying noise in your speakers that you can't get rid of -- Buy this card. For the price, it is , again, hands down the best. It rivals $50-$100 cards and contrary to some reviews the Software (latest) from the website works right away no issues (this is on Win 8.1 Pro 64 Bit).

Product works great for home built Windows 10 64-bit desktop; you may have to use the CD that it comes with for initial installation. The analog jacks (colored ones) will be plug and play with your motherboard. The optical out (S/PDIF) didn't work for me at first, but after going to the ASUS website, then bringing up this card, then going to Support, then going to Manual & Document and downloading the manual I was able to get it working. If yours doesn't work off the bat when plugging in a toslink/optical/s/pdif cable try double-clicking the Xonar DGX Audio Center icon in your system tray (right-hand side of taskbar by default in windows) which is the black square with blue circles icon. From there click on the arrow to open up more settings and on the "Main" tab check the box for "SPDIF Out" to enable it (before doing this the port had the light lit up red in there so it looked active, but it really wasn't active until doing this). Hope this helps anyone who needs it, great sound card though, great fidelity, a bunch of different settings to adjust if that's your forte from the Xonar DGX Audio Center.

I bought this to give my sound a little oomph. I use a pair of Sennheiser 558s and Sennheiser 650s. I need an amp for the 650s no matter how you slice it. However, the 558s can be powered by these.

Pros
1. Fits on my mobo.
2. Plenty of ports
3. Up to 150ohm of power. Good for a lot of headphones.
4. You can connect your front headphone jack to it.
5. Inexpensive for what it does.

Cons
1. Wish it provided more power. Would love to use my 650s on a soundcard without the need for an external amp...at least on my PC.
2. Took a minute to get it to recognize the device on Windows 10.

Overall, for what it costs, there's nothing wrong with it. Get the Uni Xonar drivers (Google it) instead of the stock drivers. They work better. You can get the official UI for it with the Uni drivers and still have complete control. That's how I work my set-up on Windows 10. I would recommend it to people looking for a modest, but cheap upgrade to their onboard soundcard.

In case anyone was wondering if this card would work under Linux - I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a newer ASUS motherboard. I'm using the optical S/PDIF and all is working well out of the box. No additional driver installs needed. It also looks like it has recognized the headphone jacks as well. I hope this helps if you were wondering.

Había comprado unos audífonos Sennheiser Game One (https://www.amazon.com.mx/gp/product/B00GWU8FTK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) y a pesar de los excelentes reviews me había dejado poco impresionado, me di cuenta de que seguramente era por que el audio integrado de mi computadora no era lo suficientemente potente y claro para manejar audífonos de mas de 32 ohms, los Sennheiser son de 50 Ω (ohms).
Esta tarjeta de sonido, proporciona suficiente poder como para manejar estos audífonos e incluso más, el micrófono también se escucha mejor y mas claro que con la solución integrada.
Los archivos FLAC se escuchan perfecto y claro, mucho mejor que el pequeño audio integrado de mi tarjeta madre.
No existe interferencia de los demás componentes de la PC, el sonido esta aislado y no hay hiseos incluso a volumen máximo.

Al principio estaba contemplando un AMP externo, pero esta tarjeta me ha dejado mas que satisfecho.

Lo malo: Los drivers de Asus. Estan desactualizados, y no los pude instalar con windows 10, ademas usuarios reportan muchos problemas con ellos. Lo mejor es usar unos drivers de terceros, los UNi Xonar drivers, están basados en los de Asus pero con errores corregidos y funciones aumentadas. Recomendados.

Un ultimo consejo: Algunos usuarios han reportado ciertos problemas con la tarjeta y el audio integrado, cuando instales esta tarjeta, es mejor desactivar el audio integrado de la tarjeta madre a través del BIOS antes de encender la PC

I read the 1 & 2 rated reviews and they only reported problems with SPDIF & front panel connections and have other ASUS products that I'm happy with so I bought this card. After uninstalling the 'old' Realtek driver(s), I shutdown, installed the card in a PCI-E 1X slot and turned the power ON.
Everything was OK in the POST process but as soon as the message "Loading Operating System" appeared, for about a tenth of a second, the system power was turned OFF and then back ON to start the boot process again. This happened continuously. I could never get to Windows to install the ASUS driver(s). I tried a different PCI-E 1X slot, same thing happened.
I've never had that experience before over many years of upgrading hardware. I can't imagine what is actually wrong but the card has to be the problem. I have a watt meter which shows that my PC uses only 135 watts so it's not a power supply issue.
I removed the card, booted into Windows, re-installed the Realtek driver(s) and had a working sound system again.
I initiated a Return as Defective to Amazon.ca rather than wasting time should a replacement have the same problem.
