Simple design works with 15.6" HP

After having several laptop cooling systems with fans that have broken after a few 'oopsie' moments by my teen, I decided to do a bit of research via CNET on the best coolers and this one was #2 on the list. For twenty-five bucks I knew I'd be getting a sturdy plastic laptop base with four padded corners to elevate the laptop sitting on top of it.

Upon unboxing it's not much to see (as expected), but the cooler had virtually no flex which was good as that was my primary concern. My daughter's 15.6" HP laptop fit just fine on it and when placed on a level or slightly angled surface (like a lap) there was no wiggling of the laptop when it was perched on the cooler and she was typing. (This had been my secondary concern when buying it.)

The fan noise that had been irksome with other laptop coolers was no more, and so too was the struggling internal laptop fan noise that had been present when no cooler was used. Mission accomplished! This laptop cooler elevated the laptop just enough to allow for proper cooling air intake and expulsion. Its low-profile build is attractive and other than your lap being cool and not hearing fan noise, you hardly know it's there. It does prevent heat transfer from the bottom of the laptop to your lap too, which makes for more comfortable use. It's also compact enough to put in a laptop back along with your laptop, or tuck away when not in use.

I'm surprised and pleased with this product, and would buy more if needed. I recommend it, but check the placement of the fans on your laptop before you buy to make sure the design will benefit you. It should also be noted that larger 17" laptops will hang over the edges a bit, so if you're not crazy about that aesthetic, keep looking.

Simple, effective, long lasting

Laptop cooler is simple and effective. I am on my second one and it works better than any of the 'fancier' ones I have tried. The fabric bottom allows non-slip use on lap and should prevent no scratching on furniture - but the fabric on mine is recessed.

CONSTRUCTION: Lightweight plasitc, fabric bottom, soft rubber pads. Inside is a very firm foam, I think. Simple design allows for many sizes of computers.
DURABILITY: With care (I am gentle with things), it travels well and holds up to heavy use - I have travelled thousands of miles with this in duffles and suitcases (over 60,000 air miles) for a dozen years. It gets constant use on my desk. The fabric backing is coming off, the inside is coming loose, and a little cracking is beginning, so I have a new one. The old is still in use.
EFFECTIVENESS: It does the job. With a centimeter of clearance, the air moves freely. When I am using graphics heavily on my Mac, I place a tiny desk fan to help circulate and have excellent results. Nothing special, just does well.
VALUE: I think it is overpriced, but am willing to pay for simple effectiveness.

It works really well for what it is: passive cooler and a heat shield.

So far it's held up well, it does a good job of keeping the bottom of the laptop unobstructed and slightly elevated for air flow.

This isn't fancy but it works and it's way more convenient than having to plug active cooling fans in every time you set your laptop on it.

Inovative - Flexable

I was looking for a device that would keep my laptop cool. Most of the ones I found work by using a fan to draw off the heat. Unfortunately these don't work well if you set in a chair and use it because they have the same issues as the laptop - they need circulation for the fans. This device relies on the laptop's own cooling capabilities. The base is a solid foam core with an aluminum cover that has 4 raised areas that keep the laptop above any obstructions such as blankets, pillows, or slacks.

I have a MacBook Retina Pro 10,2 15 inch and it gets really hot just sitting on my lap. I guess I'm too hot to handle. What I needed was something that will allow airflow without requiring the noise of fans. The Xpad worked great, it's completely fanless, no electricity, has a good grip for both my legs as well as my MacBook. The laptop is larger than the Xpad by about an inch on both the left and right sides. This is fine as I would rather not have it the other way around. Now I can work for hours and last longer sitting on the couch without burning my legs. I'm 5'9 and weigh 140 with dazzling brown eyes if that makes any difference to anyone. :)

I was skeptical about this laptop cooler---the design seemed ridiculously simple so how could it possible work? My laptop is a 15.6 inch and gets dangerously hot when sitting on my lap and desk after hours of use, but this laptop cooler keeps it nice and cool even after 8 hours of constant usage. I wish the bottom of the cooler was padded so that it felt more comfortable on my lap, but I used a pillow under it and it worked just fine. I think it beats the big plastic gizmos with multiple fans hands down---no noise, virtually no weight which makes it easier on the legs when you place the laptop on it, and it's easy to transport if you're traveling with your laptop. It was a great purchase, and I will recommend it to friends and family. Not a bad price either!

Pleasantly surprised

I have struggled with heating problems with my laptop. For those who are unaware, heating problems not only can damage the internal parts, but they also reduce battery capacity over the long term. With the trend toward non-replaceable batteries, keeping your laptop cool is now more important than ever.

I've tried several coolers that plug in via USB and blow out air. Logically, it makes sense that those coolers would work. But surprisingly, this low-tech pad works better than the others, I suspect because it allows the heat to escape rather than getting neutralized. As another plus, it doesn't require any battery charge because it doesn't plug into the USB port.

The cooler isn't cheap. I do think it's probably overpriced for the material and production costs. But it works better than any other cooler I've tried, so that makes it worth the cost for me.
