Top customer reviews
As the brand name XtremeMac implies it's designed with iPod/iPhone/iPad in mind. It has a built in dock to connect and charge your device and there's even a free iOS app to control (but unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a MacOS version at this time). I already have an iPod and iPhone, plus a laptop & desktop Mac, so Mac connectivity is a plus for me. However, while researching wireless speakers, I learned that some only had AirPlay (iTunes' wi-fi connection) but not Bluetooth. I couldn't find anything on the company's site (minimal information there) or in other reviews, as to whether it would work with any Bluetooth device, but decided to take a chance, since I could still use it in the yard with iTunes. Set up was very easy and it connected to the iPhone, computer, and most importantly, the Kindle quickly and easily.
First off, they have a quality look and feel to them. No cheap plastic here. Understated markings and very unobtrusive appearance, will blend in nicely with any surroundings. It's about the size and shape of a large clock radio, without the LED clock face. Has an almost Bose-like look and feel. Sound quality is very good, especially in a small room like a bedroom or den. Some nice hardware/accessory touches: international plugs are included and easily switchable for those who travel. Nice remote, but the app takes it a step further, offering preset equalizer settings for different types of music (as well as custom settings). Only drawback so far is that it can only be paired to one device at a time, so switching from, the computer to the iPhone for example, involves an extra step and maybe half a minute.
All in all, I'm very happy with it, and am even considering getting another (hoping to see a closeout since the model is a couple years old) for the bedroom so I won't have to move this one from room to room. For about the cost of some tinny-sounding and cheap-looking speakers, this is an excellent value.
it sounds like a home theater system, the only limitations are the size of it, at very high volumes it still sounds crisp, although there is a very clear point after that where it sounds like a small speaker being pushed too far, which is exactly whats happening.
either way for a small music/movie/media speaker you cant beat this.
i paid $45 and its well worth it.
the actual $200 price i would stay far away.
I will say that their technical support has been really good, they thought after going through some troubeshooting that it was an out of box failure of some sort, so I returned the unit for a new one. Same issue with the new unit as well. Here is what is happening: Normally with these bluetooth units you go through the initial pairing, and then it's a matter of you turn the unit on, select bluetooth as the source and the unit connects to your device and you play the music. Once you are done you either power the unit off or select a different source and the bluetooth connection drops. NOT with this unit. I was surprised that after just plugging in the unit (power button has not been pressed) I could see it in my bluetooth manager and pair with it even though the unit was powered off. So I turned on the Tango and started playing music, it sounded really good but there are one to three quick drops in every song. I am used to having that happen may a couple of times in an entire session on my portable devices, but they were much more frequent on the Tango. Then once I was finished with listening I powered off the unti and assumed all was well. Then I got a call and could not hear the person on the other end. What I found was that I was still connected to the Tango unit even though I had powered it off. The only way to break the connection is to either cycle bluetooth on the phone, or unplug the Tango unit. THEN the next time you want to play music I figured I just turn on the Tango, select bluetooth as the source and start the music, but that isn't how it's working. I have to turn on the unit, select bluetooth, then press the play/pause button on either the Tango or the remote. This connects the bluetooth, then I press play/pause again to start the music.
I hope they can figure out what this is happening and provide a fix (or unit that works as it should). I really like to sound quality but it's a complete hassle to use the bluetooth capability the way it's working now...
I will update when they get back to me on the problems with bluetooth.
