Top Customer Reviews
One of the first things I noticed is that this 1-piece speaker system is solidly built. It has a foam mesh that covers the front panel and conceals two 3" mid-range speakers and two 1" tweeters. On the right corner lies the volume knob.
On the bottom a plastic grill covers a 4" woofer. On the top, right-hand side, there's a 4-button set that controls the bass, treble and the unit's controls.
Although it is a self-contained unit, the system lacks the true fidelity of a "better" speaker system. There's next to no lower register and as such dance-oriented music sounds almost acappella.
However, live and acoustic music sounds wonderful. Scrolling down my playlist, I came across John Denver's "I'm Sorry" and it sounded remarkable. The same thing for The Brentwood Jazz Quartet's, "My Heart." So, there's a trade-off even before we discuss the price issue.
While I was testing this model with a different smartphone, a call came in. Fidgeting to answer the phone, I (and everyone in the vicinity) heard my caller's voice, loud and clear. It was a scramble trying to find the volume button. I had to end up hitting the speaker button to cut off the Bluetooth reception!
Speaking about rooms. This is ideal for a small, enclosed room or a cubicle but, in an open area, it loses its vitality very quickly.
I think the retail price of $150 far exceeds what I think it worth in terms of what it offers and what also available out there. I think somewhere between $50- $65 is more appropriate considering it is mainly for mid-range music and a default loud speaker.
Pro's and Con's
+ Handsome and well built
+ Best suited for vocals, acoustics and phone conversations (perhaps even conference-calls)
+ All smartphones that have Bluetooth capabilities, not just for iPhone/ iPod Touch and iPad owners.
+ Convenient docking station for the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
+ 30'+ reception.
- Price. Exorbitant.
- Sound range is limited, if the buyer has a broad taste in music.
I'm very particular about my audio quality. I never buy my music via iTunes, due to the imperfect quality in the downloaded files. Instead I buy the Compact Disk, and import it into iTunes using Apple Lossless encoding (aka, 700-1200kbps vs 256kbps from iTunes). I tell you this so you can know the accuracy of my statements.
The sound produced by this speaker is very crisp and clear. Acoustic guitar and Snare Drums are reproduced sharply. Personally, I have the Treble and the Bass levels turned to their maximum. Granted, this isn't a Bose system, but I believe the sound quality excedes that of a typical $100 iPod Docking system. The Bass isn't ear drumming, stomach thumping loud, but for what it delivers, it's accurate. Basically if your looking for something to use at a rave party or something, your looking in the wrong audio speaker genre. This isn't meant for that.
The Remote Control does everything it's been advertised to do. With a clear line of sight, it will control the system from across the room (approx. 30ft, I haven't tested further). IT WILL NOT CONTROL MENUS ON YOUR IPOD, but this isn't advertised. Besides, the ergonomics of the system allow for very easy left hand access to your iPod (iPod Nano 5th Gen in my case), and easy right hand access as well. The remote allows for skipping forward and back, play/pause, volume up/down, bass up/down, treb up/down, source, and power.
An unadvertised bonus on the box is a microphone built into the system. With it, you can use this device as a speaker phone. Even when you have iPod selected and playing as it's source, if your phone is linked via bluetooth, it will pause your iPod, and wait for a response, either play music, or answer via TangoTRX. It works well. I have not streamed audio through the BlueTooth, though, I look forward to using the bluetooth function with my new MacBook Pro.
The only issue with the system that I can see, is the buttons on the top are a bit difficult to press, and it's difficult to tell when you've pressed them, but I rarely use them. The remote is kept in my pocket most of the time. The volume knob works nearly perfectly.
I strongly recommend this system. It works great, looks great, and sounds great too. Go for it!
The video was recorded with my iPod Touch using the "Videolicious" app.
There is also a free iPod app available in the Apple App Store for the Tango TRX that gives a bit of additional functionality, including an equalizer function.
Overall I'm very impressed with this purchase. It is pretty much exactly what I was looking for as a long-needed alternative to earbuds.
