What are XyliMelts?
XyliMelts are oral-adhering discs that stick to your teeth or gums to relieve persistent dry mouth. Use XyliMelts during the day or while sleeping and find temporary relief from frequent thirst, sticky dryness in the mouth and throat, and other unpleasant dry mouth symptoms. Made with xylitol, a natural sweetener that helps stimulate saliva flow, XyliMelts utilize adhering disc technology to slowly release 550 mg of xylitol, which is most effective when continuously released and lingers in the mouth, especially when used while sleeping when saliva flow is lowest. XyliMelts last for hours, moisturizing and coating the mouth for optimal comfort. The slightly sweet, mint-free flavor freshens your breath and the xylitol may reduce the risk of tooth decay.
How Do I Apply XyliMelts?
Notice there is a tan side and a white side to the melts. Once applied, the white side will be touching your cheek.
The tan side is what will adhere to your gums and hold the melt in place.
Place a disc at the gum line on the outside of a molar, upper or lower. Remember, the tan side will adhere to your gums.
Use your tongue to push the disc/melt to a comfortable spot. Once there, do not push with your tongue for 10 seconds, as this will disrupt the adhesion which grows stronger over time.
TREATMENT OF DRY MOUTH AND BAD BREATH
Treatment for dry mouth not only increases the amount of saliva produced, but, in most cases, also takes care of its accompanying symptom, bad breath.
XyliMelts help alleviate both dry mouth and bad breath symptoms. XyliMelts not only help increase saliva and freshen breath, but also last for hours, working to moisturize and coat the mouth for optimal comfort.
- Brushing and flossing regularly
- Brushing your tongue – to rid the mouth of dead mouth-lining cells, food particles, and bacteria
- Visiting the dentist regularly to ensure dentures or braces are properly fitted and cleaned
- Quitting smoking or using chewing tobaccos
- Natural remedies, such as chewing mint or parsley
- Keeping the mouth moist by drinking water or chewing sugarless gum or sugar-free hard candy to stimulate the production of saliva
UNDERLYING CAUSES OF DRY MOUTH AND/OR BAD BREATH
There are several causes of dry mouth and bad breath including, but not limited to:
- Daily use of medications that cause dry mouth
- Cancer treatment
- Poor dental health
- Illness, disease and their associated medications
- Infections of the mouth and respiratory system
- External agents, such as food or tobaccos
As mentioned above, one of the most common causes of dry mouth and bad breath may be a side effect of taking medication for a variety of conditions. In fact, dry mouth is listed as a side effect for over 1,800 medications that are used to treat conditions such as: Depression, Anxiety, Allergies (antihistamines and decongestants), Diarrhea, Urinary Incontinence, and Parkinson’s Disease.
Dry mouth can also be a side effect for many other illnesses and diseases including: Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Chronic Sinus Infections, Postnasal Drip, Diabetes, Acid Reflux, and Liver or Kidney Problems.
While there are some causes of dry mouth that can be avoided, such as tobaccos, food, poor dental hygiene, etc., many other conditions and medications cause dry mouth as a side effect, which cannot be prevented. To help ward off bad breath and dry mouth as a side effect, the quickest and easiest form of treatment is to increase saliva flow through the use of XyliMelts for Dry Mouth.

I'm glad there is now an option to buy these in a bottle. If I wake up at night after about 6 hours, I often want to put new ones in my mouth and with the foil blisterpacks, the foil noise was loud and crinkly enough to disturb my sleeping husband. He is happy about this bottle option. Perhaps I could have taken all the discs out of the foils and put them in a bottle, but buying them this way is much more convenient.
I noticed the discs are slightly different from those in the blister packs and at first I thought they were smaller which would be disappointing. But I compared the pills side by side and really they aren't much different, the ones in the bottle are a bit rounder/taller so perhaps the total amount of substance might be the same or pretty close. I hope the maker never reduces the disc size since this is a product many people depend on to not awaken in the middle of the night with an awful dry mouth. I'd rather pay more if needed than have the disc size reduced.
I really love the slightly sweet flavor (hardly noticeable), I'm glad they have this since it would be harder for me to sleep with a strong flavor such as cinnamon or mint, and I wouldn't want something sweeter.
I wrote an earlier review saying that it gave me gut blasting diarrhea. It didn't seem to work out. I tried to find a good alternative. In my reading, I found others had similar problems. It was suggested that your body might be able to adapt to it in a week or two. I decided to give it another try. I was able to adjust to it. Now, it sometimes has a mild laxative effect. That's ok. Still makes me a little gassy. My family hopes it gets better. If I sleep well, it lasts through the night. If not, I may have to put in another one. I no longer wake up with my mouth bone dry. It may be a little sticky and no super moist but it is not dry. My teeth are coated. I feel that it is helping to preserve my teeth.
The only thing I don't like is this packaging. It's ok for home use, but not at all convenient when out and about. I much prefer the blister pack packaging. Much more convenient to put in a pocket or my purse.
