'Yesterday' is a charming and insightful recollection which introduces the reader to life in Liverpool, just as an unknown group appeared on an already vibrant scene. That group was, of course, The Beatles.
Anybody of any generation who has actively followed somebody of note, will appreciate the sometimes torturous and often bittersweet nature of desperately wanting your idols to succeed and attain the recognition their talent deserves, whilst also knowing that success will be the one thing that ultimately puts them out of reach, forever.
'Yesterday' is full of fascinating vignettes, vividly encapsulating the inevitable ups and downs of being an original fan, set against a backdrop of growing hysteria and a meteoric rise to fame that would eventually see The Beatles leave Liverpool to conquer the music world.
You could read a million books about The Beatles but still never truly understand what it was like to be there in the beginning, this book goes a long way to resolving that, full of interesting snippets that you'd never have known unless you were there, now thanks to the author, you are.
So, dig out your platforms, backcomb that hair and immerse yourself in the experience! Screaming is optional (but heavily frowned upon) Enjoy, as I did!
For all it's limitations, I enjoyed the book and the fab cover picture of "Marg No 1 Fan" with John is worth the £3 download fee on its own!
A must for any true Beatles fan.
