And now this. Just barely dipped into the triple digits here in Phoenix and the camera body has melted and is no longer usable. Come on, summer hasn't even started yet.
I am a big fan of Salvador Dali, but not a fan of this Yi dashcam. I'm sorry..
Tip: make sure you get a class 10 micro sd card. I accidentally threw a class 4 in there and couldn't figure out why it didn't like my sd card.
EDIT: one day later this camera is not holding up well. I live in Maine so the cold weather may have something to do with it but when i start the truck even after a few hours, the camera battery is dead and when the camera turns on (when the truck is turned on) it doesn't have enough battery power to keep the LCD screen on even with the power cord attached. It keeps shutting off after a few seconds. I could only get it to stop when i turned off the camera to let it charge for about 10 minutes before turning it back on. Then it worked fine for the rest of the 35 minute ride. Same thing happened on the way home from work later today. Not really sure how to fix this issue.
Since changing out the 12V plug that connects the micro USB cable to the camera I haven't had any issues. The camera powers on when the truck is turned on, LCD shuts off after 1 minute (which I set), and records video without issue. I hit a big bump the other day and i noticed the LCD screen came on an it recorded an "emergency" recording which I'm not sure if it was supposed to. I use the app without any issues and can download videos to my phone easily. Besides that, it works as it should and I don't even know it's there. I upgraded my star rating to 4. I would have given it a 5/5 but the issues at the beginning were enough to make me almost return it.
Been using it for a couple more weeks now. Since changing out the power adapter I haven't had a single issue. It work's perfectly (even in the -31 degree morning we had recently). The only thing that i notice is that it will do an emergency video if the wipers come on and vibrate across the windshield when there isn't enough moisture on the windshield. I kept seeing the LCD screen come on and finally put 2 and 2 together to realize why it was doing the emergency recording. The vibration caused by the windshield wipers caused it to come on. Other than that, no issues! great little camera.
Everything has been working as expected so far. The image quality is good for this basic car cam that I bought for about $35 (SD card not included). This is my third car cam in the last 2 years. The image quality is comparable to others that had a higher price (and all, including this one, are cheaply made in terms of buttons, case plastic etc.). Other ones seem to have had less testing or quality control compared to this one. I feel like this one is a bit more professionally made, with a bit better quality control, design, and interface/instructions. I had no trouble figuring out what to do based on what was supplied (as opposed to the total gibberish that my other cams came with). The menus are simple to understand and use, at least for me (granted I am somewhat technically savvy), with a relatively easy interface on the smartphone when using wifi. I like wifi much better than using the cheap buttons and screen on these tiny, and cheaply/thinly made car cameras (as pretty much all are, with none made in the US).
I purposely waited for a month to do the review, to see if everything stays the same and working as described above. It has. So, considering the reasonable price, it gets 4 stars from me at this point (not 5 due to cheap buttons that feel like they could stop working at any time, cheap fragile construction, noise/static when the camera is handled, etc., i.e. not something durable that is made to last, the way a US consumer would have expected in the past). A previous different one, from a different company, had its battery die completely somewhere between 1 and 2 years. I am hoping this one has a better battery that lasts. I think things other than the battery might keep working as I don't need to touch it, given the wifi, and live where the it doesn't get too hot or too cold. So lets hope this one keeps working for more than just a year or two.
