We use one of these for Youtube footage of breweries sometimes mixed lighting environments (Channel name: Brew Review). The variable color temperature helps us balance weird lighting scenarios and remove shadows from our faces. The light is BRIGHT, bright enough to eliminate shadows in broad daylight outdoors at full power, but don't expect it to overtake the sun in any way. It's typically used on our main cam, hot shoe mounted pointed directly at our faces. We have started using another hair light recently and are pleased with the results in combination with some reflectors placed around the viewing area. The accuracy of color on these lights is extremely good, I've noticed that it can balance quite well to almost any lighting situation with it's variable color functionality. The included diffusion panel that slides into the light offers a bit softer spread of light and does impact potential total output, but not usually to a degree that it's a negative, maybe about 5% less output. There's a red tinted filter as well but I see no use for it ATM for our purposes..
We paired it with a few NP-F750 batteries (batteries are NOT included with the light, FYI, nor is the AC power adapter. Both sold separately) and while a little heavier than using it with smaller batteries, there's NO worry about shooting all day and losing power, we've never actually fully drained one during shooting. I may purchase a few smaller batteries to save a bit of weight as we typically take a lot of stuff for an on-location shoot.
The box includes a stand which is essentially a flash stand (yes, you can use your existing flash stands with this!) and works well to stabalize the light on flat surfaces, so long as your battery doesn't weigh the back of the light down too heavily. (read, 750 size batteries are on the verge of being too large. No tilting forward/backward with these guys as the light will just succumb to gravity at that point.)
The included remote is also a lifesaver when you've got a shot framed up nicely and you're not near the camera or light to control it from the back panel. I've also used these at weddings for backlighting and key lights and while it works alright, but I still prefer off-camera flashes for that purpose at the moment.
I do wish the barn doors could be completely removed, and you need a security bit to remove the doors and the mounting tabs aren't removable at all so you'd be left with these small black tabs on the sides of the light, potentially catching on fabric or material when shoving it into a bag or something during transit. They could have just used a regular allen key or even a LocTite'd phillips screw to make life easier for us all. Also of note, we sprayed the barn doors' interior sections matte black so that the light falloff would be more pleasing and this has in fact, worked well and is a recommended modification.
Overall, great light for the price! Highly recommended for portability and video purposes.
Good: The lights themselves are bright and accurate. The 5500K is significantly brighter for daylight only color obviously, as the bicolor only only uses half the LED bulbs for each color. Still, the bicolor is more than adequately bright in each color temperature for a variety of uses in a small lighting setup, and combining both temperatures yields a nice bright slightly golden daylight look, very nice. The remote and iPad app work great for controlling both lights, up to eight can be controlled separately. Really super-useful for one-person setup when checking your lighting on a monitor without having to get up to adjust them, as in YouTube vlogging, or any time the lights are located in a less convenient position. This was one of the big features that led me to choose this light, and it works perfectly, very happy with it. The most important thing though is the quality and brightness of the light, and that is very good as well.
Meh: Haven't really found any use for the hand held handle, the included diffusion filters aren't too useful (wasn't planning to use them anyway, the barndoors don't do much cutting and add some odd shadows if you are trying to use it as a more narrow background light.
Bad: The mounting system is terrible on it's own, and it can't be removed (the top part is molded as part of the light, and there's no other 1/4-20 jack. The best solution is to lock it in place and attach it to a separate ball mount of some kind, I think. The downside is that the existing mount has to stay in place even with a separate ball mount attached, and I question the existing mount's long term durability, it seems pretty cheap and flimsy. The table top stand is of extremely limited use, the feet face in one direction only, which have to be oriented in the same direction as the light is tilted or the light just tips over. To change the direction of the tilt (up or down), you have to remove the feet and turn it around, which is an annoying pain. And with any battery larger than an np-f550, it's difficult to get it to stand up no matter what you do. So, pretty bad in all respects.
Overall, it's a good purchase as you get some clean, bright light that has a great deal of versatility for a very good price, and the remote control really makes for easy operation. Just know you are probably going to need to rig a better mounting system, which is more of pain because the existing one can't be completely removed.
