I bought 2 YN 600 ex RTs along with the YN ST-E3-RT transimitter. I've had the products for a few days and I've taken a couple of dozen pics and all seems fine at this point. I have a Canon 6D and a Canon 430EXII. I intend to use the flash equipment primarily for off-camera portrait shooting. It took me a while to decide if I wanted to purchase the YN 600 flashes or pay quite a bit more and buy original Canon 600 flashes. At the end of all the studying, I decided to give the YNs a try - the difference in price was just too much ignore. Perhaps I will buy a Canon 600 EX RT in the future, to complement my 2 YN's.
Would like to pass on my observations here in case some of you may be in the same position I was and would like to know a bit more about the YN vs. the Canon.
-Practice pics I've taken so far are bright and clear. Flash seems to work fine on my 6D with Transmitter, and on-camera.
-The Canon comes with a filter/gel holder and 2 orange gels. The YN does not.
-Little foot stand provided with the YN has a very tight fit. A little hard "pushing" the flash into the slot. Whereas with the Canon foot stand, the flash slides right in easily.
-Canon flash has a button that release the flash head so it can be tilted/turn for bouncing. The YN does not have such a button. You simply turn the head in the direction and angle that you want. But the clicks with each turn are firm. So far, the head stays in position quite well when rotated to different positions.
-Manual for the Flash - First part of the manual is in Chinese. English portion is in back half of the manual. Not perfect English, but readable.
-Manual for the Transmitter is written in better English. English first, then Chinese in the back half.
-The little rubber seal that sits around the hot shoe came off very easily. See attached pics showing rubber seal on, and rubber seal off the hot shoe. I'm considering returning this unit and getting another one. Rubber seal can be put back on very easily, but ideally, it should not come off so easily. Very easy to lose it when not paying attention. Flash seems to work fine even without the seal, but I would rather have the seal on for protection and a stable connection. The transmitter has an identical seal around its hot shoe and seems to be securely placed - it has not come off.
-The YN flash does have both radio and optical wireless capability, BUT the YN flash CANNOT act as Master for optical wireless. It can only act as a Slave in optical wireless setup. And of course, it can act as Master or Slave in Radio wireless setup. On the other hand, Canon 600 CAN act as Master for optical wireless. So, if placed on my camera as a Master, the YN cannot trigger my 430 Ex II wirelessly (430 EX II is optical).
-The YN Transmitter only works in Radio mode - no optical wireless capability.
-The YN Transmitter has AF assist. The Canon Transmitter does not.
-YN does not have the "Personal Functions" in the Cust Function mention that are present in the Canon 600 (allows you to change LCD color, etc.)
-A couple of the cust functions on the YN manual are not explained very well. For example, I don't understand what the "My TTL" option pertains to.
-There are a few cust functions found in the Canon 600 that are not listed in the YN cust functions (e.g., Flash Metering Mode; Quick Flash with Continuous Shoot).
-The YN flash in slave mode, has blinking red lights that cannot be turned off. Supposedly this is there to help shooter see that the slave flash is powered and ready for another shot (this is in addition to an audible beep that CAN be turned off). Apparently, these flashing red lights can be turned off on the Canon 600. I don't have a Canon 600 to test this.
-I tried to download the YN firmware update for the Flash from the YN website. It is loaded onto my machine, but I can't open it.
Apparently, it's a ".rar" file and I don't have any type of program on my computer that can unzip and open these files. Still researching on how I can open these files and consequently update the firmware.
I've tried this Speedlite with my Canon EOS 650D/T4i DSLR as the optical master and the YN600EX-RT and Canon 430EX II Speedlites as optical slaves and they work great. I've also tried a Canon 600EX-RT mounted on my T4i as an optical master and the YN600EX-RT as an optical slave and that works great. In that way, it's compatible. It also works as a sync-only slave with other camera brands using its S1 & S2 optical slave modes. My friend's Pentax controlled it fine. I've tried every feature I can think of without any problems. It's almost identical to the Canon 600EX-RT.
I've found two incompatibilities, one minor, one major.
1) The Canon 600EX-RT has a backlit LCD display that changes from green to orange (or the other way, I could care less) when switching from Master to Slave mode. This would be nice if the backlit didn't turn off to save battery life, but because of that and other mundane reasons, it's a minor missing feature.
B) The YN600EX-RT doesn't do Master Optical Wireless. They only implemented Master Radio Wireless. But, it's Canon RT compatible. They had issues with it as Master (and their YN-E3-RT controller) controlling the new Canon 430EX III-RT Speedlite, but firmware v1.8.5 fixed that. If anything, that is a testament (emphasis on the TEST) that they are truly using the USB port as intended: the ability to deliver firmware updates for new Canon equipment (the Canon 600EX-RT has no USB port for firmware updates).
I had issues updating my firmware, though. It came with v1.8.4. v1.8.5 fixes the 430EX III-RT incompatibility. I found their latest v1.8.6 on their Hong Kong site, but it was actually v1.4.2. I found the correct site is www.photo-store.net; just click on Firmware Downloads.
YN600EX-RT Speedlite is a great flash at a bargin price. At that price it's almost comfortable to mount it on a teatering stand with an umbrella that can be easily blown over.

Coming to the flash
Pros
- Best part it doesn't require any wireless trigger for Canon 70D (money saved $$$) . Inbuilt radio of Canon 70D syncs seamlessly with the flash and setting it up didn't take much time. Seriously this was a huge relief for me. hush!! Please check with your camera brands.
- Worked seamlessly in High Sync
- Attached flash diffuser ( bought it on amazon itself) and was able to get some cool macro images ( refer to my images)
- This is my first flash and an introduction to flash photography. For a social gathering took 250+ photos some with high sync mode before battery of my rechargeable Panasonic Eneloop Pro died out
Cons
- At times flash just mis fires or say doesn't fire at all. It happened twice now till around 500 - 600 photos i took . Could be because it was hot.
- Last time went in park on a hot and humid day and found it flash sign beeping which does suggest that it was kind of getting hot. Again heating could be a problem. No issues when i clicked in house with cooler environment.
- Build quality is Ok didn't feel sturdy. I don't know how many drops it may survive. I hope i don't drop it.
I am still learning a few more things so will keep you all updated

however there is only one problem, I ordered the flash from EnjoyGadgets fulfilled by Amazon. the unit arrived the next day on free shipping option (I m not prime user or member), once I unboxed it, I noticed a scratch on the round body of flash head when its turned forward, also when I rotated the flash head I saw the body color is faded and white on the angle reading between 120 and 150.
so I had to return the flash because I believe its a used unit or defective or damaged piece or may be used one returned by some other customer and they sent me the same. I contacted the seller and amazon, both said either keep it and we will refund 20% or return and refund full.
so I returned and ordered another one for same price but from other seller.
other than this, the unit is absolutely fantastic and great in performance and use, I m using energizer rechargeable nimh cells, 2000mah capacity and the refresh rate is almost zero....you can keep firing flash and it wont delay or heat up or stop or slow down.,,,,really amazing!
Update 09/26/2016:
I have returned the flash unit and ordered a new one, amazon.ca has refunded me within 2 days of receiving back the return and today I got the fresh piece. this time its new and fresh and no scratches or blown out color or whatever! its working fine and fantastic!
thank you amazon.ca for the best customer support!

Customer service was excellent. I bought the two units around November. My purchase was Amazon certified, and because it was around the holidays, i had 60-day return and refund policy. I returned one speedlite before end of January and got my money back. The speedlite worked fine when i first bought it, but after a few weeks when i needed to use it for a wedding it started acting up. The main issue was that it shot at full power no matter what power i set it to, and i shoot manual. Also, it kept going back to default settings everytime i turned it on and off.
Overall, it's a great value. I use it with the yn-e3-rt on my trusted Canon 5d classic without issues.
