Review after 17 months of usage...
These *not* in-ear buds have solid sound quality for their price range, and they're quite "fun" with good bass response and clear mids / highs. Again, nothing revelatory, but great for their price and a very substantial step up from any bundled earbuds.
(Note that since these do not actually insert into your ear canal there's very little sound isolation, which can both good and bad. Personally I've had mixed results getting in-ear-canal buds to keep good seals while running and was slightly concerned with their potential for hearing loss, so I overall like the design of these open buds, which have always sat snug-n-comfy in my ears.)
The included cylindrical case is a nice touch that helps keep the cord from getting tangled in your backpack etc.
I got ~17 months of usage out of these before the right channel died: the connection went bad between the plug and the cord. I've always been pretty gentle with them and kept them stored in the supplied case.. from what I've gathered this fault point is sort of the achilles heal of this product line. Hopefully Yuin takes note and reinforces this connection in future revisions, at which point I'd happily give 5 stars.
My advice on whether or not to purchase these earbuds really comes down to how long of a life you expect out of them. For me I'd rather invest in some slightly higher end headphones now and enjoy several years of great sound rather than replacing an entry level pair for ~$40 every year, so at the moment I'm not planning on replacing my expired PK3s. If you find yourself losing earbuds quickly or just want something relatively cheap this may still be a good choice for you, though.
