We also have the Planetbox (actually, we have two -- the Rover and the Shuttle), so I can do a quick comparison in case anyone is also considering those. The Planetboxes have the advantage of being stainless steel, but they are heavier and are not leakproof. The normal-size Yumboxes (5-compartment & Panino) are between the Rover and Shuttle in terms of food capacity. The Rover is the full-size lunchbox (both wider and longer than the Yumbox), and holds significantly more food than the Yumbox (in my opinion, it's actually slightly too large, at least given how much I tend to pack for my preschooler). The Shuttle is a great size for snacks or a small meal for my 1-year-old, but is not big enough for a preschooler's lunch.
For my preschooler, we continue to use all three -- the Planetbox Rover, this new Yumbox 5-compartment, and our old Yumbox 4-compartment Panino -- depending what we want to send that day. (I usually choose the Yumbox, unless I want to send something larger than will fit in any of the compartments, in which case I pack the Planetbox Rover or the Yumbox Panino). If I had to choose between these three products and buy just one, I would probably buy this one (the Yumbox 5-compartment), however if you send a lot of full-size sandwiches, you might want to go with the Rover instead. (The Panino is fine, but with three main compartments (the last is just a dessert well) I feel like it doesn't allow me to include as much variety as I usually like to.)
Anyway, bottom line, this is a great product. If it were made out of stainless steel instead of plastic, it would be perfect. (The newer Yumbox trays are made out of Tritan though, which is considered safer than many other plastics) Don't hesitate to buy if you are considering it!
As the manufacturer states, as long as you don't put liquid in it, it should not leak. When I put dip or yogurt in the "treat" circle, I latch the box, press down on the lid over that section, and we are good to go, even with the box stored on its edge in her lunch box for four hours.
We wash and air dry the tray each day when she comes home from school, then I pack again after dinner and refrigerate overnight. I have two boxes, in case we have a delay in washing. I am considering getting an extra tray because the nooks and crannies underneath take awhile to drain and dry.
Overall, we very much enjoy our Yumbox, and it is the correct size for a typical 5 year old appetite.
