And haven’t used it a lot yet. First impression are very positive. Mounted in a JK Wrangler with the unit on the tub wall behind the passenger seat and the head on a lido mount off the passenger seat bolt. Waiting on my programming cable.

Got my programming cable and 13 v power supply. Programmed it using chirp. Works great. No issues.. Getting 5-9 on my transmissions. Seems to be receiving better than my bf too.

Compairing radios... apples to apples (almost).

The good about this radio is that it comes with [almost] everything you want. It transmits well, seems sturdy and well made and can cross-band repeat. It also scans one side of the radio while you talk on the other and you can easily switch sides for scanning and talking. It does NOT do Wires X!

There are two very annoying things about this radio. It's difficult to program without the software and it's difficult to detach the control head.

My Icom 4100A has it right when you detach the control head. I push a button and it's in your hand ready to carry inside. There are little pressure pins that make contact, not a cord that you have to struggle to unplug every time. I hate that little twisted cord. If you take your control head out all of the time this gets really annoying. The Icom 4100A also has a sim card for programming, so no need to lug the laptop out to the car (or the radio inside) each time. If you change or reprogram a lot consider this fact. Icom also has free software you can download that's pretty easy to use too (hint hint Yaesu).

The good is that everything [but the exterior speaker] comes with this radio as far as mounting and separation mounting goes. It's all there (hint hint Icom). The lesson here is to learn what you are purchasing and what is included with that purchase.

Icom is STUPID for making you purchase the mounting brackets separate for a MOBILE radio. I got one "free" for Christmas, but I hate that about Icom. If I had known I would not have purchased my Icom. There is nothing like that with this radio. Having to purchase separate software is not very nice, but this radio can be programmed without it... although I could find NO ONE that does.

I am a "new ham" and got my Ticket in August on 2019. This Yaesu is my first "real" quality Amateur Radio. I use the 440 and 145 bands almost exclusively and you would need antennas to work the 6m and 10m bands. The 50w max output is enough for me to handle all the work I need. 1 piece of advice, this radio is less expensive from many Ham Radio vendors, so buy from Amazon for convenience but you'll probably pay more.
