Turn that spare tire on the rear of your vehicle into a bike carrying machine. Easy, tool-free installation is a bonus, as well as the anti-sway cradles to keep your bikes from contacting each other. It fits nearly any size spare tire and includes locking cable to keep bikes secure.
Carry up to two bikes at a time on your spare-tire-equipped Jeep or SUV with the Yakima Sparetime bike rack. The Sparetime is easy to install, with a premium design that attaches directly to your spare tire's mounting bolts to create a secure, snug fit. As a result, you'll enjoy full peace of mind whether you're driving down the highway or along a gravelly country road.
The Sparetime includes two integrated bottle openers for kicking back at the campsite.
The Sparetime comes with a universal mounting plate, two extensions designed to fit most lug patterns, and a 60-inch locking cable that secures the bikes to the rack. The plate also supports both centered and off-centered mounting, depending on which orientation is most convenient and stable. SKS-lockable for added security, the rack--which is made of durable powder-coated steel--measures 13.75 by 30.5 by 18 inches (W x H x D) with arms extended.
The Sparetime fits spare tire widths P195 to P318 (12.5 inches), but will not fit a spare tire mount with an eight-hole bolt pattern or hole-pattern diameter greater than 5.5 inches.
Yakima has been dedicated to eradicating "rack envy" for more than 30 years. The company employs a ton of cyclists, campers, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, hikers, and kayakers, all of whom load up their car racks and take to the forests, slopes, and waterways every chance they get. This dedication helps Yakima come up with new ideas and inspirations each year. Ideas like, "Hey, let's make a snow mount you can operate with gloves on so we don't get a debilitating case of popsicle finder." Or, "Let's put padding and nets in our cargo boxes so gear doesn't rattle around like it's in a giant maraca." And, "Let's put integrated bottle openers on hitch-mount bike racks, since you can't carry one around while you're wearing spandex fancy pants." Boasting a legacy of innovation and quality, Yakima is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon.

For hauling a single bicycle, absolutely no complaints. When you want to add the second, you really have to maneuver the bikes carefully and it's quite a squeeze. I have a carbon Cervelo road bike, and have only tried mounting two road bikes- not mountain bikes- I imagine the mountain bikes would be an even tighter fit.
Would be much better if the mounting points were a little farther apart - even one inch would make a huge difference, and really wouldn't put the extra weight that much farther away from the base.
Update: I've just picked up a new Cervélo aero road bike, and no matter what I do, cannot fit a second road bike onto the rack. Would it have killed Yakima to move the slot for the second bike out an inch or two? Again, if you want to haul just one bike, this rack is great- but if that's all I wanted, I could just take the front wheel off, and throw it in the back. Nearly impossible to carry two bikes, and I will be looking for something a little more suitable.
While the Yakima Spare Tire compensates for this, I found there was still about a 2-inch HORIZONTAL give in the way the unitcan tilt because of the looser way it fits over the short bolt that comes out from the spare tire mount. Because it is not flush (I realize some room is required), it rocks back and forth, and even with the outer lockable handle is tightened and locked can swivel.
My only other criticisim, which would apply to all racks of this type is that even though the rubber straps that go over the bike are of excellent quality, they can come unsnapped from their hook under pressure. My new bike came unhitched from all three of these rubber straps on it's first trip on the road! To add fault where due, I may have tightened these too tight over the bike bars, creating too much tension. Fortunately I was in the slow lane on the freeway and managed to get over to reinforce the straps with more velcro staps (Hitchmates) I had purchased after reading other brand reviews with straps that actually broke. Yakima's materials are all high quality, but the there is just a bit of play in the design that leave me to feel that sufficient pressure from a deep pothole or sudden turn, would cause the support straps and/or vertical beam to give, which could result in loss of precious cargo.
I still feel this is one of the better spare tire mount designs, but perhaps a little more engineering could make it fool proof.
Also with an off center tire mount, the bike tires still extend beyond the width of the car (even in the accommodating adjusted position of the vertical beam). It might be better on a center mount, with even weight distribution of the bikes.
I feel there is definite potential in this unit, as the quality and convenience in its design are excellent. Just a few more ways to offset potential sudden jerks/pressure that could unstrap the bikes would be beneficial to allowing customers to fully trust this unit under safe driving conditions. I drove carefully home, and the additional velcro Hitchmates did help keep it from wobbling, but I was "oh so nervous" with every San Diego pot hole, after losing it once. Had I not read other product reviews of people losing their strats, I would not have purchased these and had them on hand. Thankfully, the bike did not hit the ground even when it fell off of the support rack holding the front end. Had it come completely free, however, I would have learned all too soon about the various parts of my new bicycle...at least those the Mack didn't crush. Unfortunately that's not trustworthy enough for me to use on a repeated basis.
I have not yet taken it on a long road trip -- just around town so far -- but it seems to be secure. This was the perfect choice for me with a RAV4, and wanting a rack that I didn't have to leave on all the time, but just put in place when I needed it.
